Summertime was very modern - compare to the pablum that was coming out in terms of pop song at the time. Gershwin was no doubt influenced by Stravinsky and Antheil along with Ellington and the NY jazz scene

In fact, "Summertime" is one of my least favorite songs (right down there with "My Favorite Things"), but total immersion has a kind of inoculation effect, and every once in a while (this Fahey, for example) the interpretation gets something about it just right.
