Hi Scott. To follow up on William Parker & swing, thought you might like to see this passage from Parker's Sound Journal, self-published c.1998:

"Swing is any life-affirming gesture: bird singing in the tree, baby being born, little kid skipping down the street. All green plants swing. Salmons swing. Swing has nothing to do with music. Swing has to do with the restoration of humanity.

"Martha lies in her bed surrounded by her five children. She has cancer and is dying. She could not care less about 'Does music swing?' If someone cured her cancer, that would be swing.

"The bottom line is all terminology is only a rung on the ladder. Nothing can substitute for accepting the mystery. We must accept the mystery on its own terms."

"Not Scott Williams, Scott McDowell." I remember when some guy named Joe (?) became an FMU DJ and he just called himself DJ Black Ops because there were already a buttload of Joes here and it was just a lot less confusing. Maybe you need a bad-ass DJ name like that? How about DJ Marble Countertops? DJ Unwise Hair Part? DJ Soundproof Phone Booth?

I think I'll never forget the sequence of Scott M wrapping up the late night/early morning show with, "Thanks for listening, thanks for hanging" then the shocking trumpets of "Modeh Ani" by Regesh for JM in the AM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am

@joe mulligan: for me the classic transition from from JM in the AM to Scott, because of the way the anthem just seamlessly segues into Hipnosis

Turnip Druid: I realized how false so much of the USq Greenmarket was false when I asked a guy in coveralls for parsnips and he asked me "what are they????""" I do not live there any longer but I always liked the organic bearded guy [Greg??Craig?? -selling the best garlic and the best/deformed organic carrots- a real farmer with lovely interns!!!] Hope he is surviving..
Avatar 11:14am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

USA people are not to know what parsnips are, lest they be branded communists. Vegetable Ignorance is a point of nationalist pride. Maybe.

@RTD: I guess it comes down to you, me (stupid enough to put my neck out), your boss (probably to blame for distracting meetings), or Bryce (who already has the B initial and didn't deliver on a rightfully highly expected swag item)

Turnips and parsnips
PS That was 1980s

pss -Recipe: melange de steamed parsnips and carrots - globs of butter a bit of sea salt and a tonne of ground pepper with fresh green beans or sugarsnaps or podded peas with roasted potatoes and roasted yams.. A glass of white while cooking and a bottle of red at the table!!!
Bon Apeteite!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am

we get parsnips at the food coop; also i've asked folks at the greenmarket in brooklyn where they live and oftentimes the food is coming from upstate but they employ locals to help out (i mean, who wants to travel for hours for a part-time job?)

While in London a few weeks ago it was discovered that "sultana" appears to be a British English term for what USA people call "raisins." ... and suddenly the word "raisin" sounded monstrously vulgar, far less lyrical. This is truly a land of savages.

Much better if fruit sounded like vampire ladies.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am

@RTD: "raisin" is just French for "grape". That you guys chose to use the term for the shriveled stuff is indeed an indictment
