"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Good morning. Trying to wake up. Wearing two pairs of socks in case one of them gets knocked off.

yeh DT, this is the official opening theme to each weeks show. the regulars here will now share their thoughts with us on Wake Up

Ken From Hyde Park:

It's kind of the fruitcake of opening theme songs. You find different stuff inside it each time and some people don't like it at all, yet it's endearing to others.

On a side note: What movie theater will allow teenagers who fall asleep during a movie to remain there until 4AM?

Back when I worked in the music department of a Major Chain Bookstore (circa mid-2000s) I would always try to push Singles Going Steady on parents buying Green Day for their kids. They'd invariably pass, and it took a while for it to dawn on me that they might have been scared off by the title of the first track.

i like this new quiet storm direction you're talking, john.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am
tim from champaign:

@Monica - I meant to write this when you filled in for Sheila last week. I have a fond memory of one of your Sunday evening fill ins from a couple years ago. My daughter was under a year old and we were listen in while I making dinner. My daughter was beginning to respond to music and she was really getting down with the jams you were spinning.
Avatar 10:58am
Monica:

very cool, tim. thx so much for sharing that. do you work for U of I? love the group champaign from champaign,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am

I haven't been here long, but I don't think I've seen the phrase "quiet storm" mentioned here, at Chez JA, before. #keepingitlocked

karlward:

When does Iggy Pop come in on this track?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am
tim from champaign:

Monica - I used to work at the main library at the U of I. In July we moved outside of Tacoma WA for another library job where I select and deliver items to homebound patrons. The record store in Champaign that I'd help out at had a wall sized poster of the band Champaign. Rumor had it that the singer still lived in Champaign. Also, a maintenance guy in the building was a driver for Brother Jack McDuff and George Benson in the 60s. He had great stories!
Avatar 11:06am
John Allen:

Soooo many records issued as an incomplete statement because iggy pop couldn't show up shirtless and whisper cameo
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 11:07am
karlward:

Painful to admit, but true. But there was that time that Iggy Pop and Lou Reed switched places for a couple albums and no one noticed. At least we have that.
Avatar 11:12am
Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Karlward-could you unpack that a bit? Switching places? Huh? You mean metaphorically or actually?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 11:14am
karlward:

I heard about it from JA, you'll have to ask him for details. The one thing I know is that I was not speaking metaphorically.
Avatar 11:16am
Monica:

JA has a rarely revealed smooth jazz side to him that few of us are privy to. Go ahead, ask him about Dave Koz, Mindy Abair, Grover Washington discographies. @tim, industry macher irving azoff also from that area. from danville, went to UI. where he met and started managing dan fogelberg.
  11:23am
Andy the painter:

i always liked the smooth jazz they played on the weather channel, in the morning on the motel/hotel tv when i was traveling a lot for work. (90’s) it was very soothing. do they still still do that?
don’t have cable.
Avatar 11:24am
Ike:

Some of these people probably remember hearing that JA phase, @Monica. He played that stuff on the air regularly for a while and I believe I roasted him for it in the comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
The Oscar:

I had an Uber driver a couple of months ago who put on a Dave Koz CD, then spent the entire drive expounding on how great Dave Koz is, and how this was the only CD he ever played for passengers, and how it never failed to bring people together. The icing on the cake was the thirty seconds or so before he put on the CD, during which he was absolutely listening to "The Real Slim Shady."
Avatar 11:30am
John Allen:

yes Ike, you had a good laugh for yourself that day, but it was a small fire easily doused
Avatar 11:33am
Ike:

A certain other FMU DJ figured JA had Record Collectors' Disease and ran out of other things to collect so he was reduced to collecting smooth jazz. Other theories are welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am
steveo:

whenever john plays something I don't like, I figure it's just because I have bad taste and listen extra carefully
