This week: station manager Ken Freedman, on the year ahead in tech

Recent News

• Happy New Year! Here's how to delete online accounts you no longer need (Consumer Reports, Dec 27).

• As I mentioned on Tech Pie this morning on Wake & Bake, Zuckerberg-funded researchers are testing a neural device on primates, the "wireless artifact-free neuromodulation device," or WAND. A mind-reading, muscle-controlling device. In 2017, re this BBC piece (19 April 2017), Zuck announced his goal for Facebook users to "share a pure thought or feeling" straight from a neural device. "We're working on a system that will let you type straight from your brain."

Artificial intelligence turns brain activity into speech (Science magazine, Jan 2): Scientists "analyzed recordings from the auditory cortex as patients heard recordings of people naming digits from zero to nine. The computer then reconstructed the spoken numbers from neural data alone." In another case, "A microphone captured their voices as they read single-syllable words aloud. Meanwhile, electrodes recorded [a patient's] brain's speech planning areas and motor areas" as the patient read individual words. "The network mapped electrode readouts to the audio recordings, and then reconstructed words from [the] brain data."

Deepfakes: How a new technology is being used to put women’s faces on porn stars’ bodies (Washington Post video, Dec 30, 2018): quote from Robert Chesney, U. Texas School of Law. See also the companion article from Dec 30.

....In "smart tech" news......

Above: "We live in a world where our toothbrushes request microphone access." -Will Scott, Jan 5, 2018

And from superhero actor Chris Evans.......

DNA-testing company 23andMe has signed a $300 million deal with a drug giant (July 2018): "The pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline announced it was acquiring a $300 million stake in 23andMe." Writes David Golumbia on Jan 5, 2019: "When you buy products from 23andme etc, one of the many destructive things you are doing is *paying* to give big pharma incredibly valuable information about you--and your relatives and others who didn't consent."

.....and finally, from our friends at the TSA.....

"TSA has an app claiming to tell you the wait times at airport security. Here are the permissions it requires." -Dan Gillmor, Jan 6, 2019

For discussion with station manager Ken

How Hackers Bypass Gmail 2FA at Scale (Vice/Motherboard, Dec 19, 2018): "A new Amnesty International report goes into some of the technical details around how hackers can automatically phish two-factor authentication tokens sent to phones." See also last week's conversation with Matt Haughey about password managers and other security issues.

A slashed tire, a pointed gun, bullies on the road (AZ Central, Dec 11, 2018): Arizona man draws gun on self-driving vehicle.

A smart toilet promises a ‘fully-immersive experience’ (The Verge, Jan 6): "an 'intelligent toilet' with built-in surround sound speakers, ambient mood lighting, and Amazon Alexa voice controls" - who's ready to record bathroom audio to send to Amazon HQ? Get ready to flush $7,000.

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch could become Netflix's secret marketing weapon (The Verge, Jan 2): "The greatest advantage lies in the data Netflix can gather from user participation and the ways that data could be used to create an internal programmatic marketing infrastructure." Plot choices in the interactive show are presented for "data harvesting."

Don't get me wrong I want to eventually. Just looking for your opinion on deletion vs. deactivation and a related question: what do you think are the odds of facebook one day, prospectively under a more enlightened government, being regulated/becoming a more consumer friendly less creepy version of itself or even a public utility?
