"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

At the risk of contradicting myself and piling more work on him, I think Clay deserves his own show more in line with the Dusty aesthetic, he does so much I think it's unfortunate he's limited in his ability to play the music he really wants to play. Yes, I know that might mean Slipknot, Phil Collins and Starcastle, but are we not Freeform?

@vincent, free-form doesn't mean just anybody is allowed on the air to play whatever they want. My terrible college radio station was like that. It was wretched. A station like WFMU can only exist if somebody is carefully curating and gatekeeping who can get in, and keeping OUT the people who just play Phil Collins and Slipknot. Just my opinion!

WDRE started as WLIR, which went "New Music" in 1982 (2nd after KROQ in 1980) with the slogan "Dare to be Different". Ownership change forced change to WDRE in 1987. Streams still at wlir.fm I had the best of commercial radio worlds living in LIR's signal range in Mamaroneck and going to school in Buffalo in the 80's which had a great college station and the amazing somewhat free-form alternative CFNY, "The Spirit of Radio".

Thick as a Brick is a great concept album, just like mother's song Billie the Mountain, parodies that end up besting the thing they are chiding. Linda totally. And families do fight! But there’s lots of love underneath it all

Yesterday, someone on another playlist told me out of nowhere that the movie Bohemian Rhapsody sucked out loud. I disagreed, saying I enjoyed it. The person told me I was an idiot. The DJ basically agreed. I left that board and will never return or listen to that show. That's also the only time that has ever happened in 25 years of listening.

Masculine and feminine, yin and yang. It’s what makes the world go round, right?

hierarchy is only one form of social organization. not the only form. what remains is feminine.

Carmichael, unfortunately we have an FMU family member who likes to pick fights. he's pretty insulting about it too. the key is to avoid the bait.

defining whether a type of organization (or disorganization) is "masculine" or "feminine" is a symptom of a desire to show approval or disapproval and thereby boost the definer's status

LL, I was kinda stunned that the dj joined in. No need to waste any more of my time over there.

that's right Rachel! yin & yang are how it goes. if you look at the symbols of yin/yang, you'll notice there's a bit of yin in the yang & a bit of yang in the yin. one becomes the other. it's a lovely concept.

William Burroughs and the other beats had influence and inspired those who were re-wired and able to tune in to their message. They anointed the chosen. The Paris ordained. You had to be open to their signal.

I think that's a bit too rigidly Hegelian, I don't think we exist in this dialectic, but I don't have a good alternative since we love to think in these kinds binaries, and I don't think I've ever read a theorist who has ever produced a satisfactory response to the antagonism vis-a-vis Hegel, though they certainly have tried, its just a bit too much taking down masters house with his tool. (I hope this does not come off as an attack, more just musing/tossing a thought out there)

@LindaLee, @Cmurtha: I think we tend to classify things along binary lines out of a kind of laziness (two is one more than one, that's enough to divide everything up) but also because we do like antagonism and opposition (fight! fight!), when our experiences and organizations are richer and more complex
