Thanks Joe - the tunes getting me out of my MoodyBlues caused by a UriahHeep of conflict with the EX.... My ex not The EX... 3 cheezy jokes in one sentence... An award is due - A Golden Turd???
@LindaLee Yes, quite a vague report, so you immediately suspect the worst, though they sometimes infer certain things if they know someone died by their own hand.
Just tuning in, hearing about Scott W. // me?

my dad died at 73, but lived a relatively happy and peaceful life. I consider that lucky. He only was inactive for 2 weeks prior to his passing. Not bad when you think of what one can suffer through.
I have a special copy of Scott. I'd left it on my turntable when my son was a toddler and came home to find him with his metal Thomas the Tank Engine toys putting them all to bed in the Roundhouse via the train turntable. Couldn't get mad at him as it was my fault for leaving the record on the turntable but I now have a precious copy of that record...pristine on one side but scratched to hell on the other. Love them both.
i don't understand purposefully making others' lives difficult. making a point of it. how twisted do you have to be to spend precious time on that? life is short!

prudy:
I have a friend who was threatened with a knife at work (gun factory) for being gay. He didn't have citizenship yet but filed a complaint nonetheless. Amazingly, the company fired the punk. Sometimes HR does the right thing.
Your show is so good, I can’t get anything else done. Thanks for the Scott Walker tribute. I was reading the Dylan Jones Oral Biography of David Bowie last night and didn’t get why the final chapter was titled “And In Front of That Door is You”. So you’ve cleared that up.
@KellyJ: Yeah, it's a big bummer. @karlward: Has no one done it yet? Maybe I should! @Reno: Thanks. I like your moniker, btw, nice spin on a fave Mimi and Richard tune!
@P-90 it was a lot of fun to listen too and you never knew what would happen next. Wonder how much sleep the various DJs list during that and the volunteers too
@Goyim, Yes, you used to be able to hear some good stuff back in the day. The Einsteins had something good going with WHFS when it was in Bethesda, and the AM WAYE was pretty good as well. Things started taking a slide when Georgetown U stopped broadcasting. Now 'RNR is about it, mostly filled out with ex-HFS jocks. Thank goodness for the interwebs. Pretty amazing that we are in the radio range of the nation's capital without a decent station.
Ah, Ernest's honky tonk style of singing is like a drunk bouncing around the dance floor. Floyd Tillman sounds even drunker.
10:36am
John from Florham Park:
@linda lee I don’t know why either but very glad they are doing it
10:37am
John from Florham Park:
@phillipe there is 98 rick from Baltimore they play decent stuff
10:39am
John from Florham Park:
@phillipe and the chatters there are damn few stations that play decent stuff anymore consider XRT out if Chicago and WRAT from the jersey shore pretty good
@ Phillippe: i miss the old hfs djs.. i'll have to check that out. is weasel still around? i was gifted "Cerph's Up" a couple years ago by an old pal from leesburg.
@Phillippe there's good radio out of DC still for sure -- WPFW and 92Q for two -- but dial segregation has increased wildly and "white" radio is rough going. The left side of the dial was a magical multicultural wonderland in the 70s and 80s for me in Annapolis, and then there was -- as you say --102.3 and the early days of 99.1.
@JFFP I can't deal with 98 Rock. They talk more than Stashe Ken and their music selection is nothing great. I guess I could count WTMD in the halfway decent music mix. I just put on the FMU app and bluetooth to the radio when I'm driving and I'm a happy camper when I'm driving.
Wheel of Fortune dude Pat Sajak was in negotiations to by WRNR back in the late 90s according to a guy I knew who worked there. He wound up buying the AM sister station, WNAV
@goyim I've bounced through those stations a couple times but didn't stick around. I'll give them an extended listen. Problem is DC isn't much of a college town, to steal from Spinal Tap /s
Goyim in the AM, I moved here a year ago but used to be a frequent visitor to the area. I loved Ray Davis’ Bluegrass Show. Lived for it. Now there’s nothing but classical. It’s driving me to
get a new car with internet access
@annie the great Bob "Here" Showacre passed on a few years ago, sadly. @Phillipps the Sajakization of my hometown continues to horrify me every time I make it back there.
@Kevin_Ringwood_UK I met Christopher Ryan who played Mike in St Ives when I was a kid. We just stood gawping, while my parents had a very pleasant conversation with him, he was there to paint.
I guess since I grew up in this area in from late 70s to early 83 I got spoiled by WNEWFM and WDHA and has a bit of a culture shock when I moved to Florida and discovered how much the rock stations suck down there and could not wait to get back up here on vacation
@KP ...and the bluegrass of the last 10 years was already a pale, corporate-donator-friendly version of what WAMU used to play. The Dick Spottswood show was astonishing, kind of DC's hillbilly version of the Secret Museum of the Air.
By my calculation, the station's now at 96% of goal. Somebody must've opened the mail & found a bunch of checks or pledge forms this morning for the total to have jumped thousands like that.
@linda if I had a unlimited funds right now I would donate a very big portion to this station with the only condition that they keep on playing very good music
as of now 1 in 10 listeners contribute, so the station is hanging on by its teeth. if every actual listener contributed only $10 a year ~ that's what, 3 cups of coffee? ~ we'd be much better off!
It seems that the single was recorded before there was a band. It was Chris Butler having wrote the song and performed all instruments and asked his friend Patty Donahue to sing. He got signed to Ze and then formed the band with Patty and recorded the first album. www.allmusic.com...

Listener Alexandra:
I believe you called the segment "One and Done", Joe ;)
I asked my family in the past to make a contribution to FMU instead of giving me a gift I don't need. Didn't get much cooperation, but when they did, more swag!
@pantz: There are a lot of them. The one that comes to mind is "Swordfishtrombones," which I bought when it came out. I hated it! Then I listened to it again 6 months later and it changed my life.
Ok very weird coincidence I just got this David Carroll album yesterday. There is record store here that sells blind boxes of records that in poor condition or not worth the dollar bin. My wife uses them for craft projects but before she does I go through and do some cherry picking based on cover art and piqued interest. Welll guess what one of those was that I grabbed yesterday. Weird.
Good Morning, Joe and everyone!
@ zlulpa at 10:56am -- EXACTLY! same here!
horribly saddened by the passing of Scott Walker too -- but yes, THANK-YOU Joe for this wonderful show!
sounds like they're doing just what they should! :-) i've got my eye on my guy here. he may be very ill. he's also 20 years old! we'll see. he's napping too!
11:29am
Brendan:
@Joe, regarding records you don’t like: as a kid in the late 70s I did that Columbia House offer where they sent you 12 albums for a penny, then have to buy x records down the road. It was hard to find a redeeming song on some of the records. Still i felt kind of guilty and wondered what kind of life of crime it would lead me to. Apparently one clever guy used different mailing addresses to accumulate 26,000 such records. I think my haul included Foghat Stone Blue, Nazareth
oh gosh yes -- former Guess Who member(s), became BTO
@ Mr. Palchepo: yup! we used to call them Bachman Turner Overdrive
a co-worker at my first job out of college (1980s) bought me BTO's biography from the Salvation Army store that was around the corner (yup this was in Manhattan!) -- he knew i would appreciate this, especially all the photographs of the them in leather jumpsuits -- as their fame expanded, so did their waistlines :)
I know, at one point, Bachman had over 400 Gretsch guitars. I actually e-mailed him pictures of my Roc Jet for authentication purposes, and he got back to me in an hour.
indeed. no man's land.
one night we caught a cab home from a club on the LES. the driver actually asked if we were scoring dope. i guess he wanted the return fare.
our family lived out on long island, on the edges of northport; our across the street neighbor was an old russian lady, Baiko by name. i loved being around her, and my dad loved practicing his russian on her. such an old culture
That's amazing re: Juliette Greco. She performed at one of my fave venues as it closed for renovations, and she was one of the first to perform there when it opened
@stevi grew up listening to big band music on the old WNEW AM back in the day
11:55am
McGreivey:
Randy Bachman's CBC radio show Vinyl Tap is usually interesting. He tells good stories, and knows everyone. I couldn't find old episodes on the CBC website, but he's still doing me episodes, and it's broadcast 3x a week.
