They've been doing cognitive studies of dead brains since the 1790s (during the French Revolution), It's been known that consciousness pervades long after most other facilities stops, and then, even unconscious neural activity last for hours. In the pig experiment, they drugged the brains beforehand in case in the off chance their consciousness revived and to prevent further suffering.
