Speaking of Pere Ubu, Ubu Dub podcast has an episode interviewing David Thomas and talking about the new album which sounds promising.

This interview is fantastic. I WILL BUY THIS BOOK!

Didn’t Martin Hannett slow down Joy Division tracks on purpose to make them more dirge-like and dark?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm

Well, if you listen even to what's on Short Circuit (never mind as Warsaw) they were a much punkier band at first.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Nate K.:

More Joy Division coming up, and @Jake will adress that very question.

I wonder how accurate the movie, "Control' was
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
ultradamno:

I remember in the eighties someone I knew recommended Culturcide to me with the note "the singer committed suicide which makes them interesting", not ironically. I don't think either. It's an odd thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
ultradamno:

And it only works that way if it's the singer too, isn't it? If your bassist does it, probably not so morbidly romantic or whatever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
TheNewLexGofer:

God bless you, Ian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Nice interview. I remember when all this went down.

JakeGould:

Thanks Nate! The funny thing is the Velvet Underground seemed to have a similar path: If it weren’t for Andy Warhol shaping them, they would have just been a basic rock band.

thank-you so much for this interview (and thank goodness for the archives! so i can listen when there is not so much disruptive noise going on here!)
looking forward to "This Searing Light, the Sun, and Everything Else"
was totally heartbroken and horrified when Ian Curtis committed suicide; so many of us were anxiously awaiting Joy Division here in the States

I put on WFMU while I was hosting a dinner party tonight and was stoked cos it was joy division and New Order, two bands that I was raised on and hold tight to my heart (despite not owning an unknown pleasures shirt).
