Michael 98145:

{ On January 8th 1970, in a car accident a few kilometers outside Athens, the contemporary music world lost one of its most exciting and provocative talents. Although Jani Christou was only 44 when he died, he was regarded by many as one of the leading composers of his generation. He was controversial, highly talented, and greatly admired both in his own country and abroad. And yet although his name remains respected in contemporary music circles to this day, performances of his music are extremely rare. }

@coelacanth: Sarah Benhaïm. It's it French, unfortunately, and is unlikely to ever be translated. It's a Ph.D thesis is sociology/aesthetics about DIY noise defended late last year, WFMU is mentioned a few times. If you can read French, I can send it to you (it's not too academese, but 760 pages though)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
fred:

@coel: so far, yeah. But I'm biased because the thesis is about the local noise scene I know very well. But the academic/formal approach is weirdly refreshing, coming from someone who was part of the local scene even before starting her research. And many in the noise scene are not foreign to academy or music theory. I'm only 5% through, but the defense was fun: academics on the left, noise show regulars on the right (70/30 ratio), with a musicologist dissecting "A Cunt like you". Weird to see these people in daylight, but we take community and support seriously
