"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

How many guitars are we gonna hear?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
tim from champaign:

I do like a lot of guitars!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
chresti:

I'm good with many guitars w/tapping. carioca had a raga feel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
tim from champaign:

I was not aware of Robert Quine's fronted records. I'm totally with you guys on his guitar work with Richard Hell, Lou Reed, Lydia Lunch, et al. He's so great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
Franco Twinkie:

I love the angular attack Quine used. Chaos and control at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

This has a nice lost in the fog feeling.

Who was on bass on this recording? Hell or Fred Smith?

Fred

Franco Twinkie:

The first time I saw/heard Television was in June 1978. I guess this is when they decided to put it on ice for awhile? Anyway, the interplay between Tom had been worked into dagger point at this time. In the punky days of 78 they stood alone and far above everything else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm

...and Richard.

hello & [insert semi-witty comment here]; you're back in the ET a.m. next week, I see

Franco Twinkie:

I'm sure the comparison between Verlaine/Lloyd and Cippolina/Duncan has been made before, but for fans of the conversational style, they book-end nicely.

That was impressive.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
Franco Twinkie:

I did not see The Dream Syndicate at Raji's, but I did see them at this dump called the Anti-Club about a mile away before the first album came out. Karl leaving changed the sound forever. Oh well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Goyim in the AM:

Yes, and his leaving the guitar behind completely is an unspeakable tragedy. But I never knew the post-Karl Syndicate could be this good.
Avatar 1:54pm
Chris from DC:

Only got to see Karl with Last Days of May, but it was staggering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm
Franco Twinkie:

They were good, and still are...but.

Saw Dream Syndicate knock this one out of the park just a couple of years ago.

I saw hardcore shows at ABC-no-RIO when I visited NYC in the early 90s. It sounds like they did other things than HC/punk shows?

there were bicycle clubs at abc no rio too

I played at ABC no Rio a few times, every time it was different....

Dave in Vermont:

I've begun to have mixed feelings about the lyrics to this song. I know it's about an individual caught in a bigger system out of their control, and/but is it too sympathetic to the idea of "dixie" which is also a euphemism for a racist state, not to mention standing in awe of a Confederate general.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
Dave in Vermont:

But also, play that sweet guitar, Jerry. And what a melody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
tim from champaign:

This is meeelllllloooowwww.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm
Franco Twinkie:

I saw an earlier version of this band in L.A. earlier that year. They were still calling themselves The Legion Of Mary. So un-dead like in their presentation. A lot of what was already crippling The Dead thankfully missing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm
coelacanth∅:

i had trouble with this song's lyrics since i first realised the reference sometime in the 70s. i only started to be able to appreciate the gist of the song and overlook that within the last few years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
tim from champaign:

@Franco - could you expand on that? ie - how were the un-dead and what was crippling the dead at that point. Just curious. I'm a half assed dead fan.I like some stuff, other not so much.
Avatar 2:44pm
Ike:

But you could tell this wasn't a Jeff Conklin selection because 1) it wasn't 10 billion minutes long and 2) Jerry Garcia could sorta kinda actually sing in that one. A little. Kind of.
Avatar 2:45pm
βrian:

Is it that you can't dance to the Dead, or is it that if you like the Dead, you can't dance?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Franco Twinkie:

Ron Tutt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm

No way, like TCB Band Elvis drummer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

Tim, some other time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
tim from champaign:

Cool - Franco. My biggest thing I find frustrating about the Dead is that they have 2 guitars and 2 drums, yet they play so politely and everything in it's right place.
Avatar 2:49pm
Hubig Pie:

Dancing to the Dead is all about the elbows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm

Sprawling, bodacious show, thanks JA & CF

Yes, awesome show today Chris and John! Thanks so much.
Avatar 2:51pm
βrian:

Elbows? I thought those were lateral fins ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm
coelacanth∅:

tim, it seems to me that's the difference between liking the dead for the music (like myself) rather than the "culture" (like "deadheads). i really like a lot of the dead but loathe some of it as well. most of the stuff i loathe is from the mid-70s, the period that Franco may be referring to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm
coelacanth∅:

(not that anyone asked my opinion)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm

Coel, lets do lunch.

Not surprising to hear from a pre-historic phish ...

haha! hey Franco, i'll leave tonight, should be there by monday.
Avatar 2:56pm
Ike:

@coelacanth∅, hold on, you mean we're supposed to wait until somebody asks our opinion on things? Holy crap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm
tim from champaign:

@coel - oh yeah, I hate(d) the deadhead culture which really turned me off to the dead for many many years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm

A walking talking fish that that evolved into a stone cold motherfucker, Brian.
