Tonight, whistleblowers in tech - featuring Jack Poulson, Irene Knapp, Liz O'Sullivan, and Delphine Halgand.

For context, consider:

I'm the Google whistleblower. The medical data of millions of Americans is at risk (Anonymous, The Guardian, Nov 14, 2019): "With a deal as sensitive as the transfer of the personal data of more than 50 million Americans to Google the oversight should be extensive. . . . When I learned that Google was acquiring the intimate medical records of 50 million patients, I couldn’t stay silent."

Pointers to our guests:

Tech Inquiry, founded by Jack Poulson, "due to his experiences advocating for Google — his former employer — to be held accountable for its planned censorship and surveillance of human rights information and activity in China and abroad."

I Used to Work for Google. I Am a Conscientious Objector. (Jack Poulson's op-ed in the NYT, Apr 23, 2019)

Senior Google Scientist Resigns Over “Forfeiture Of Our Values” In China (The Intercept, Sept 13, 2018): "In early August, Poulson raised concerns with his managers at Google after The Intercept revealed that the internet giant was secretly developing a Chinese search app for Android devices. The search system, code-named Dragonfly, was designed to remove content that China’s authoritarian government views as sensitive, such as information about political dissidents, free speech, democracy, human rights, and peaceful protest."

If you look up 'whistleblower' synonyms, it's amazing how many have an overt negative connotation www.thesaurus.com...

In other news, coming to a megalopolis near you:

Facebook has signed a lease for more than 1.5 million square feet of office space at Hudson Yards. The lease, which covers 30 floors spread across three buildings, includes 1.2 million square feet in 50 Hudson Yards, 265,000 square feet in 30 Hudson Yards and 57,000 square feet in 55 Hudson Yards. The company plans to start moving into the offices next year. (CNBC)

JakeGould:

SEO in 2019 is such BS. If Google is the only game in town and most of the SEO efforts are based on getting better Google rankings and then Google sells placement to people who pay… Why bother?
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Bas NL:

A 'start-up' begins to sound like a not-eil-enough-yet in this context.
  6:48pm
JakeGould:

And yes, I know about Duck Duck Go and others, but pretty much all of the SEO consultants I know are all basically indentured servants to Google’s raking algorithms.

@WebmasterHenry: I would chalk this up to age-ism. I’ve met you a few times and you are clearly capable and skilled; agism is massive in the tech world nowadays.
  6:57pm
Sam:

I just think nobody should have to quit their job because google is doing bad things. There should be government oversight. There should be laws against these practices. In most industries it’s not up to individual employees to stop massive egregious violations of human decency. You have the FDA, the FCC, the board of ed, etc
