I'm hoping my dog has been thinking we're on a walk during this cicadas cut, and won't want to go out (again) later.

i'm going to open the window for a bit
Avatar 7:24pm

Thanks Jesse. Loving the cicadas. I made many many recordings of cicadas in Tokyo on my trusty minidisc back in the day. Speaking of fossils (I'm looking at you coelacanth∅) they're not very accessible now though. Analogue input to digital means I'd have to transfer them in realtime. And life is just so, you know, short.
Avatar 7:26pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

Hey Jeff! I'm bringing the walk to you!
Hi passiflora!

I never get tired of listening to them. I also made some fun recordings of coqui tree frogs in Puerto Rico (on my Tascam, so more accessible, yay!). They start at dusk. Well, one starts, and then goes back to sleep. Then another starts, and goes back to sleep. Then the first one wakes up again, and that wakes up another couple, and then they all make enough beautiful racket to wake up a dozen more, and then it's Party Time for Frog Ears.

hi melinda

ifny do you have a recording of the whole evening of coqui, from the first little peep?
Avatar 7:37pm

hi melinda, sorry I missed you there!

Mayuko:

Good evening, Jesse and radio neighbors.
Avatar 7:44pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

hey Mayuko, how's it going?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
coelacanth∅:

recording the 17-year cicadas i found just twice an opportunity to get right up to one and thought i might hear something in a recording that my mind wasn't acknowledging "in person"; but unfortunately i wasn't monitoring as i recorded (as i never do) and it was a bit too close -distorted heavily. oh well, i used it anyway but if i'm still amongst the living in 10 years i'll try again to get a clean close-up.

@WR, welcome to the neighborhood, it's pretty misty here right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm

OMG, that sudden water sound made me think I had a pipe burst, it sounded so distinct from the drone sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
coelacanth∅:

and you definitely did NOT hear the sound of all your new neighbors eating everything in your welcome wagon
Avatar 8:25pm
ifny:

@coelacanth∅ I'm not certain. I did a number of recordings. But I suspect I caught the end rather than the beginning. I do have recordings that capture the false starts -- honestly it does take a number of starts to get the party going :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
coelacanth∅:

well i'm enjoying imagining it anyway!
...so many times have i wished i'd recorded something unfold...if only i'd foreseen the culmination. everything from geese to coyotes to rowdy college students to noisy neighbors...
