Caligula is not a good film, although it does have some decent qualities, mostly in how extravagant the whole production is. But it is definitely worth a view just to experience it.

I made a new pasta -- orechiette in broccoli sauce. It was pretty good. Kate liked it. I think it needed lemon. Also Rob Roys, which everyone loves. We don't really celebrate V day but it coincided with the day before Kate was to leave town for a few days and a Friday and SheilaB's amazing show, so why not have some fun.

Per IMDB: "According to Malcolm McDowell, while filming the scene where Tiberius stabs a drunken soldier, Peter O'Toole was supposed to ram this sword into a concealed rubber bladder that contained blood, wine and chicken gizzards to look like a man's innards. He placed the sword under the plate and snapped it up with such force, it hit the actor in the face and knocked him out. But the sword didn't pierce the bladder and the goat skin, with all the wine and gizzards literally bounced a few times. Then O'Toole quipped, "I think she's dropped her fucking handbag!"

Frank in Queens: Basically, steam a big bunch of small florets. Saute garlic (~6 cloves) in some olive oil with a nice pinch of chili flakes. Add broc, two cups of veg. stock, a tsp. of miso paste or the like, some salt and pepper. Smash the broc into even smaller pieces. Get it hot then cook like 15 mins. until it's reduced. Cook the pasta while this is going on. Drain but keep some pasta water in case you need it. Toss the pasta into the sauce. Add water if you want. Top with shredded parm and/or kalamata olives or whatever you like.

Re: The Valentinos (It's All Over Now) - Mike, you were puzzled by the drum beat? That beat is the quintessential NOLA street drum beat derived from the Congo Square rhythms from the Caribbean and Africa. That drum beat is in 100s of super funky NOLA tracks through the ages. I was in the car and couldn't write when you played it, but this was the first time I ever noticed that the verbs "run" and "walk" are both in the chorus, and the words don't really make sense. How can someone be running and walking at the same time, but you're in danger if you're walking when the redneck comes to get you for insulting his country. Just an observation! Maybe we need to just keep runnin'.
