@Buddha. Being a (now) aging Brit, I treat all chat boards with a certain degree of emotional distance. Nevertheless I consider a number of people I've got to know here as friends, and really enjoy being part of the global community it makes. The fact that spamoni drew strength from it during such a crappy period in his life, and that so many were so glad to give of themselves, speaks volumes.

Always latterly thought of Kerouac as something akin to a counter-cultural version of Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar': you have to read it at the right age, you don't need to go back to it until you become a parent and see it again through someone else's eyes, but it's a great part of one's development and learning about the world.

By the way, Abbie Hoffman at the Laissez Faire Supper Club of Manhattan (early 1980s) was absolutely hilarious, referring to the Daily News and Post as Zingo and Wingo by their contests. By contrast Timothy Leary in the late 1980s was rather dull, pretty much outshined by Robert Anton Wilson, who introduced him, at a demo of virtual reality.

I totally get it but I didn’t have the same experience.

Yes, Ken Kesey, he could have been one of the great American writers. The film of Never Give A Inch was/is excellent.
Good luck Carol for the marathon.

Listener Robert:

The years, what with the jailings and mind blowings, had not been kind to Leary.

@Listener Robert - I saw Anton Wilson in London in the mid 1980s, and he was amazing. Absolutely out there. (Still have the Discordian Pope Card he gave me afterwards).
