Hey Rich in Washington, it was quite interesting what you told on Monday about your childhood friends who were Apostolic Lutherans. I had never heard of them before, after googling I realized they were a Laestadian Lutheran offshoot, hence the no-tv rule makes sense. They are common in northern Finland, and i remember they might have had computers and such but television screen was not OK. Huge families with many children.

Photocopy Cha Cha:

@3:16 Rich in Washington: quite an interesting subject your wife wrote about - I never had an idea they might have brought their religion there, but of course it makes sense now that i think about it, me and my slow brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
Rich in Washington:

There are large Apostolic Lutheran populations in my county and in the Midwest US. The latter will sometimes send problematic youths to live with people in the former. I remember making pals with two such youths who were really into Hardcore Punk and we'd go to shows together. They were insane. Like brawling hockeyplayer type dudes. They ended up getting sent back because they were corrupting the local AL youths.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm

@Granny - I think mine fell out of my ear ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm

The ALs also have as many children as humanly possible. The boys also are allowed a sort of 'running wild' period not unlike the Amish Rumspringa, where they can just go apeshit and then are welcomed back into the fold, rather dramatically.
Not the girls, who are expected to take care of their many siblings until they're ready to make babies themselves.

So, colloquially, where I am from, Apostolic Lutherans are called 'bunheads' because the women do not cut their hair ever, rather they wear it in huge buns on top of their heads.

I find it funny that Pink Floyd's December 1967 appearance in Tomorrow's World has not too futuristic musical content in it. Green Onions-ish instrumental and some calm noodling. A crazed reading of Interstellar Overdrive would've made more sense.

  3:43pm

I have to admit that I have fantasized many many times and I know this is a VERY stupid fantasy... that I show up at their Church right as they are sitting down to worship and try and convert them to MY way of thinking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Many years ago I had some door-knocking Christians come to my house. I pointed out, politely, that I had my own beliefs and they weren't likely to change them, but that I'd just had a baby, had not spoken to another adult in about 12 hours, and had just made a cake. So I offered them tea and cake in exchange for conversation and we had a very pleasant couple of hours :-)
We agreed at the end of it that being a good person is what matters :-)

Another Catholic kid here. I wanted to be a nun when I was little but I think I mostly wanted to wear the outfits (which they still had in the 60s)
