Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from May 29, 2020 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Good question, @ngh. Looks like the founder opened it "in honor of his Ashkenazi Jewish ancestors." The founder was murdered at the door of the venue in 1996 in retaliation for having ousted the drunk and unruly patron. We didn't live in the Bay Area, but a week or two after we moved to our present house, we got a loud knock on the door around 3:00 one morning from Berkeley PD. There had been another shooting at the venue and the cops wanted to check out our backyard. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Okay, keeping it on the topic of television. The best version of Bye Bye Black Bird is by LaWanda Page - Aunt Ester from Sanford and Son. Why? because she can't sing for shit and she has a really filthy mouth. Lawanda rules, sez Franco. I just wish she had covered Little Johnny Jewel.

I remember copies of an old Redd Foxx comedy LP in a record store I used to frequent in the mid '70s. It was called 'You Gotta Wash Your Ass', and it featured a medium close-up colour photo of Redd in a barnyard, standing beside the rear end of the actual equine item, holding its tail up high with one hand and holding his (Redd's) nose with the other...screwing up his face into a peee-yeeeww expression. It was so-low rent that it left scar tissue on a few of my brain cells....I can see it now...so clearly....peeeee-yeewww !

@Lizzie What's funny is Little Richard in several interviews talked about how pop music was dull before him, using as evidence the tag line "Swing and sway with Sammy Kaye." Bobby Troup's first hit as a songwriter was Sammy Kaye's recording of "Daddy."

Best I can find is that the Bob Troup Trio released "Bye Bye Blackbird" backed with "Heidi" on Bullet 1035. The Bullet 1000 series appeared from Jan. '47 through around March '52. Last serial number was 1108.

In the April 17, '48, issue Billboard magazine reported that deal maker George (Bullets) Dorgon "arranged to turn over eight sides by the Bob Troup Trio to Bullet Records." So, 1947 or 48?

You should consider doing this sort of thing for a living, Dean.

Gotta be '48, because Discogs shows a missing 1035 falling squarely among that year's releases.
