It is still He 6, yes!
  7:36pm

Zachary's?

Andronico's sold out a few years ago to Safeway, which changed the location names to Safeway Community Market or some such BS. Business tanked, so just a few months ago they rebranded as Andronico's, even though it's still Safeway.

@Dean - yeah Albany is tiny. We lived in the UC Village for a long time, real close to you. I'll try and get the details from the kids.

@Franco - We still get pizza from Zachary's - that and the old Andronico's are technically in Berkeley.

Aw shoot, no Andronicos.

Used to shop at the Andronico's on Telegraph, when it was known as Park & Shop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm

Yes Zacharay's. That is so lame Dean. I mean Andronicos had a distinct personality. Doe they still have the giant paper mache cupcakes? I doubt it. No self respecting corporation would tolerate such homey nonsense.

Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm

Yeah, I used to go with my mom to the Telegraph one, whenever I visited. We'd stop there after shopping in Berkeley, before heading back to El Sobrante.
  7:48pm
Dean:

The Telegraph Andronico's closed a log time ago. It's now a (shuttered?) CVS.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:50pm

Not a whole Foods? We also went to the one on Solano.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
chresti:

There was a ravioli place we would go to on Solano.
  7:52pm
Dean:

In Southern California I'd shop with my mom at Market Basket, Stater Bros. (still there, but probably bought and sold half a dozen times), and King Cole.

Whole Foods on Telegraph at Ashby is still doing its thing. Andronico's was on the east side of Telegraph.

Solano Andronico's is still there, resurrected as Andronico's and across the street from Zachary's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Franco Twinkie:

Another place from olden tymes I like for no other reason that it was so out of step, was that hamburger place at the top of University near Collage. The food was nothing special, but I liked sitting in there and eating french fries.

Lucitzel! So nice to see you!
  7:55pm
lucitzel:

:p
Avatar 7:56pm
tim abdellah:

@Dean - that Whole Foods used to be the Berkeley Co-Op - a cooperatively run grocery store. There used to be a number of co-ops in Berkeley, including the old Leopold's records. The only one left is the Missing Link bike shop on Shattuck @ University.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
chresti:

My parents moved there in 78 or 78, Tim. I was already living in LA, our family lived in Santa Maria, (69 to 78), before moving to the Bay area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
doctorjazz:

Fun set, Gary!
  7:57pm
Dean:

If the ravioli place is the one I'm thinking of, it closed a while ago.

University and College don't intersect, Franco. Can't think of one just now, but in Albany there's Al's Burgers with its wafting plumes of mesquite smoke.

King Cole on Washington Blvd. Yes, an arch!

Co-ops: Cheeseboard? The food collective on Bancroft?
Avatar 7:58pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm

When we use to stay in El Sobrante, we would stop and get a ton of food at that Whole Foods on Telegraph before we headed up into the hills.

Thanks, tim. That's adjacent to Albany FD and PD.

Vesuvio on University?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm
Franco Twinkie:

I'm going to look for that picture, Dean I use to drive around looking for funny stores to photograph, and King Cole was definately funny looking.

  8:07pm

Vesuvio is--guess what?--closed. Turned into another place that didn't last long. The space has been dormant now for a long time.

King Cole on Washington was near my very favorite restaurant when I was a kid, Ted's, a burrito take-out joint. I remember insisting to my parents that we "dine" there on my 12th birthday. Long gone, alas.

I realize some of us congregate here and spend a lot of time reminiscing. I confess I utterly empathize with the local history mindset. When I was commuting to work, I'd pass, daily, the old site of Rather Ripped Records, which I had the good fortune to visit c.'81.

He had a couple of mainstreamy-to-us albums early on, definitely! But, maybe because he started life out as a classical Chinese musician, he really branched out after a few years.

Do you remember a record store in Albany in the 80s on San Pablo between Buchanan and Solano, one or 2 buildings north from the Happy Donuts? I think it was called something like Uptown Records. It was mainly 45s, and it was super fun to poke around in there!
