slugluv: Same with the Karens I know. One of them is my aunt, the other is my mail carrier, both of them amazingly sweet. And you're right - I must've seen SY the year before or after, I was pretty reclusive for the first month or two after 9/11.

@ mariano -- one of the coolest people i know is named Karen! incredible painter, artist, photographer, all around spectacular human :)
& yeah, i remember a DJ friend held an event in a film studio-type place in Brooklyn (i think it was called The Family?) -- deep reggae dub, roots music, etc. -- i think there was food too (from incredibly generous Rasta cooks, restaurants) . . . anyway, it was really really nice to be out with friends, like-minded people . . . and had just started volunteering with World Music Institute, so being at those shows was equally "healing"
Avatar 10:34pm
slugluv1313:

i think the first Sonic Youth show i saw was at Folk City? early 80s, "Music for Dozens" night, iirc -- Kim Gordon was still taping her glasses together

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
mariano:

ngh: Yeah same here, lots of solo/side stuff, one of the joys of NYC life. Last time it happened by surprise, must've been around 2012. Was riding my bike around the Village on a Sat night, went past St. Mark's in the Bowery and heard this gorgeous noise. It was close to the end of the show so they just let me in, was Kim Gordon and some guy making noise with guitars. '96 would've been the Washing Machine tour, caught that one at the Warfield in SF. Amazing show.

I was at a Merzbow show, and was wondering who that fit woman was in front of me. It was Kim.

Thurston and Lee always were good humored to me. Kim was always stand-offish. I can understand w/ the fan bois and in rock circles, the misogyny.....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm

Yeah, the few times I've been in the vicinity of Kim Gordon she exuded a don't-fuck-with-me vibe. Steve Shelley's suuuper nice, I spoke with him for a while once.

somewhere i have that Italian Sonic Youth book from the 90s -- to paraphrase Bob Bert in his review, "worth it for the photo of Thurston selling ChipWich on the street" . . . near Columbus Circle, iirc -- where i worked in the early 80s! still wonder if i walked by him without realizing it

DktrF: Aww, what a mensch! An ex of mine I'm really good friends with was part of the NYC poetry scene with the guy she ended up marrying, ended up in the same circle as Thurston. She once gave him some weed that I'd given her and he wrote her an email complimenting her on it. He wrote something like "Your husband smoke any of that kill?" "That kill," hah! Because that's exactly how he would say that.
