@Coel: We're looking at a drainage canal in New Orleans sometime in the mid-'70s.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
WR:

The drainage canal in NOLA looks just same. All the houses are gone. The place looks very familiar to me but could be one of several places. One of the signs I think says Russell's Seafood which if correct would place it.

A great Bird feature with Machito's orchestra. One of my favorites but don't listen to it often, on LP in storage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Sam Segal:

Upon closer inspection, I think that does say Russell's Seafood. You've got a good NOLA eye, WR.

Can't determine for sure the location of the photo. During Gary's show tried to find an an article related to the Berlin wall that i read last year. No Google search success for me tonight. Will just relax and listen.

There is or was a really good Brazilian music program on WKCR. The fellow doing the show often had guests.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Sam Segal:

Just looked up the Brazillian show on WKCR...it may or may not compete with this very program. Will have to check out the archives.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
WR:

Ha. It is on Wednesdays 11pm to 1am ET. But all Charlie Parker tonight, and looks like all archive programs playing on WKCR since the pandemic started. WFMU has dominated my stream listening for nearly a year. Haven't kept up with others I used to listen to regularly.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
WR:

The host is / was very gregarious and has been around a long time, fun listening to him interview young Brazilian performers making a big trip to NYC / USA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
Sam Segal:

And we intend to continue dominating your stream listening, WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Sam Segal:

Stream domination is the goal.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
WR:

WKCR archive is pretty limited, from what I find. More like highlights of some special guests and events rather than archive of past programs.

Dean:

If you want stream domination, then look no further than this: https://timberfestival.org.uk/soundsoftheforest-soundmap/
Plenty of streams there!

I pretty much daily lament the American/capitalist touting of "choice" as a virtue. For me, it's horrible. I don't want competing options among radio stations. I want one goddamn good one, period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm

I want one goddamn woodland field recording stream! You've presented me with far too many to choose from Dean.
  11:30pm
Dean:

That depends on what your definition of "one" is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
big brother∅:

and Sam, how many god damn artists are you gonna play tonight? can't you just pick one good one?
Avatar 11:30pm
northguineahills:

Mad Respect, WR. I used to play www.geoguessr.com w/ geonerds (streetview randomly dropped and figure where you are w/ the least amount of moves) I destoyed the competion even in Indonesia in minutes, but you'd anniliate me if it randomly landed in NOLA (but, I did map a lot of the rest of LA.....)

I have about given up on having a reliable source or sources of information, broadcast or written. Would like to have a couple of both. Lament Lament Lament.
  11:33pm

WR, your public library is there to help. The reliable source problem has been their bailiwick since long before Sir Tim Berners-Lee was a twinkle in his father's eye.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:34pm

I lived in NOLA for over 15 years. Not very big place. Knowledge Hampered somewhat because most of my time there didn't have a car.

Duma is from Nairobi. Not sure on the origin of their name. Much of their music is experimental Metal.

WKCR is doing their Charlie Parker Birthday Broadcast. It's usually a day or so, but this is his centennial, so it started last Thursday, and ends tomorrow. And, yes, I think it is mostly prerecorded, due to COVID-19, but Phil Schapp has been don't anhour of Charlie Parker music every weekday for 30+ years, along with other features on him. I think they must have enough archive material to go for months.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm

Used to listen to WKCR a ton, part of my jazz education. Mostly on FMU these days, and mostly on the Drummer stream. Just got sooo much time...

Speaking of woodland field recordings... I'm a fan of Mr. Watson's field stuff, but more so of CV.

Wait...Charlie Parker? Birdswell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm

My dad told me about the WKCR Charlie Parker centennial. I asked him if it was all Phil Schapp, and he said no. I said, "Oh, that's good...I guess that means we'll actually get to hear some music." His response: "What do you mean? Phil Schapp is music."

Used to listen a ton tio Schapp. I think he's gotten a bit bitter and condescending (maybe from teaching jazzat Columbia?). Her can drag out ask explanation endlessly, play a3 minute Bird track, than talk 30 minutes about it. Have lost my patience for it over time. But, I did learn tons listening to him.
