December 9, 2003: When I say arty I mean political, and when I say political I mean patriotic, and when I say patriotic I MEAN GAY.

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

(* = new)

Artist Track Album Comments New Approx. start time
As you've noticed, I haven't had much to say here lately. Believe me, my head's still all filled up with crap that I like talking about, but I've been a bit more conservative about dishing it out on you.
It's cool, you can thank me later.

Oakley Hall  Color the Shade   Oakley Hall    *   0:00:40 Pop-up)
Al Green  Million to One   I Can't Stop    *   0:04:24 Pop-up)
Half Man, Half Biscuit  The Trumpton Riots   The Trumpton Riots EP  Most people I know and hold in any sort of musical regard used to tape songs off the radio when they were kids and would later whittle the songs they liked best down onto more efficient compilation tapes. Whether you grew up being into Krautrock or the J. Geils Band is irrelevant -- I like both about equally well, especially Faust IV and "Rage in the Cage" -- but Half Man, Half Biscuit was on one of my cherished comp tapes made of songs taped off college radio (WPRB, WRSU, and WTSR mostly) in the mid 80s and for that they retain a special place in my heart. Kinda sounds like the Fall, dontcha think?    0:09:11 Pop-up)
Jack Oblivion  Hustler   American Slang  Jack was obviously the creepy member of the Oblivions... The one you wouldn't let hang out alone with your kid-sister. Vicki was listening online when I played this and she emailed me and claimed that he was actually saying "Pasta" and not "Hustler" and I tend to agree with her. About everything.    0:12:21 Pop-up)
Antonio Carlos  Kabaluere   Black Rio: Brazil Soul Power 1971-1980  compilation    0:16:40 Pop-up)
Alozade & Hollow Point  Under mi Sensi   600% Dynamite  compilation  *   0:18:56 Pop-up)
Dwayne Sodahberk  Partying with Dignity   Revenge of the Fight Club  compilation  *   0:22:15 Pop-up)
Mars Ill  Next Door   Backbreakanomics  I loved, loved, loved their "Blue Collar Sessions" EP, but initially this album left me a little cold. 3 months down the road, I've had it on repeat in my CD deck at home for 2 weeks straight.    0:26:14 Pop-up)
The Pixies  La La Love You   Doolittle  Erroneously announced as "No. 13 Baby." Whoops.    0:30:13 Pop-up)

The Cheepskates  Run Better Run   Run Better Run  This is a really great song. And I hate a good deal of squirmy pop music, which I would categorize this as, but really, this song is just perfect.    0:42:23 Pop-up)
Celibate Rifles  Sometimes   The Turgid Miasma of Existence  If Radio Birdman can reunite and tour the States in 2004, can't they bring the Rifles along as the opening act AND DO THE WORLD SOME GODDAM JUSTICE FOR A CHANGE???    0:44:54 Pop-up)
Joss Stone  Fell in Love with a Boy   The Soul Sessions  White Stripes cover  *   0:47:31 Pop-up)
Freda Payne  Unhooked Generation   Good Times 3 2xCD  compilation -- I got tired of typing, so look at the last 3 playlists if you want the full title....    0:51:07 Pop-up)
Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments  Cheater's Heaven   Bait & Switch  For all my Ohio people. Rory, Jamie, and Kurt. Pardon me for crashing your reunion but I'm at least a cowpunker in spirit. Oh, Karen too. And Jovan. And Lou, who has a kickass archive under his belt with more on deck in the coming weeks. In fact, this show pretty much sucked -- you should go listen to Lou's archive right now.    0:53:30 Pop-up)
Quarks    MP3      0:58:04 Pop-up)
I'm Being Good  Nostalgic for Fake Times   8 of us R Dead    *   1:01:04 Pop-up)
2raumwohnung  Ich und Elaine   DJ Kicks: Tiga    *   1:02:48 Pop-up)
Sexual Harassment  Sexual Harassment   12"      1:06:35 Pop-up)
Pyrolator  Ein Weinachtsmann kommt in die Disco   Ausland  reissue  *   1:11:48 Pop-up)

Eddie and the Subtitles  American Society   Bloodstains across California  This song later (rather badly) covered by L7. And that's not me being a snob, I actually liked L7 a lot, especially the song "Pretend We're Dead" which I thought was one of the best pop songs of the 90s. But really, it was a pretty lousy cover. I think I, like most people my age, may have had a crush on Jennifer Finch when I was 22, but now I don't remember so good. I have a funny story about L7 that I will tell you sometime if you ask me nicely.    1:23:25 Pop-up)

Missy Elliott  Let it Bump   This is not a Test!    *   1:43:02 Pop-up)
The Gossip  Fire/Sign   Movement  Why did it take me so long to figure out how great this band is? Oh right, I don't pay attention anymore!    1:45:56 Pop-up)
Kingface  Everywhere You Look   Live at the 9:30 Club, 1988  To be heard in its' entirety next week! Don't miss it!    1:48:19 Pop-up)
