	3:18pm Gaylord Fields: @Woo: The songs are often rewritten heavily rather than literally translated — sometimes to a degree where they're about an entire different topic. And some languages (Italian, Spanish) are much, much easier to rhyme in!

	3:21pm Woo: @Gaylord, thanks for that info. I had no idea. I also had no idea this many songs were done in Italian. Between foreign versions and recording Coca-Cola commercials, these bands never got a rest.

	3:24pm Joe B: the velvelettes actually spoke french, like Lesley Gore and Petula, hence the better final results!
	3:24pm Mike From Brooklyn: I'm guessing these bands already had a presence in Europe so it made more sense to try to increase the presence there via a local language version, than to try to break into a new market.
	3:24pm Gaylord Fields: @Andrew_in_WI: Haha! No sales market (or possibilities, as in communist Hungary and Czechoslovakia) in many of those countries, and countries that speak Swahili also speak either English or French.

	3:35pm Gaylord Fields: @Mike From Brooklyn: "Ue o muite arukou" was initially covered by a British band as an instrumental, and that band renamed it "Sukiyaki" as a familiar word to English speakers — the name stuck in non-Japanese markets even when the Japanese version was released outside Japan.
	3:35pm Joe B: @Mike re markets - yes and no. with a lot of the British artists, the requests came from the record label affiliates in the other countries where the artist was established, or taking off. Motown was the opposite - they were looking to break in, and used this as one of several strategies

	3:37pm Joe B: the beatles for example - that was requested specifically by Odeon, the emi german label. i always assumed they did it since they had roots there but not the case.

	3:41pm Mike Sin: I'm guessing if the regional affiliates asked for these versions, it was a rather inexpensive affair if the original multi-tracks were at the ready and the artist had some knowledge of the language. If not, the longest part of the process was having someone write out the entire song phonetically!
