  2:51pm
SledDawg:

wow - wonder how the foreign buyers reacted to these records? not getting the "real" version would sort of pi** me off I think... esp. if it didn't rock as hard. Also, how were they counted in terms of sales? Different catalog numbers?

Avatar 2:52pm
Joe B:

all good questions sled dawg! i think on some occasions, they might have gone to radio only. but pretty sure someone like petula clark, the french versions were the only ones released there etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm
Andrew_in_WI:

Yeah, when "As Tears Goes By," charted in Italy, which version actually charted?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm
Gaylord Fields:

I can't adequately express my disappointment that no one has yet to remake the Zager & Evans song as "In the Year 2020"! Hardly any effort is needed, as that song pretty much writes itself (sadly).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm
Mike From Brooklyn:

@Gaylord - you are quite right.

Joe B:

Gaylord sounds like a job for Nutley Sam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm

@Mike @Joe: Yeah, it's right up his alley! On the other hand, we'd then have a remake of "In the Year 2525"!

@ Gaylord Did Stevie drive ala Ray Charles?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Hackensack Slim: On rare occasions, evidently, and probably as well as Ray.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
Dominick:

No Italian translation of the string arrangement?
Jimmy's Italian sounds vaguely Japanese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm
Woo:

Is the rhyming just destroyed in the foreign language versions?
Avatar 3:16pm
Joe B:

temps also did it in german, but i haven't heard that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
Mike Sin:

"In the Year 2525" sounds a heck of a lot better in Italian! Probably in Spanish in and French as well... ;)
Avatar 3:18pm
Joe B:

hey Dominick! ha yes. and some of the spanish and itialian here could be reversed! or very similar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Woo: The songs are often rewritten heavily rather than literally translated — sometimes to a degree where they're about an entire different topic. And some languages (Italian, Spanish) are much, much easier to rhyme in!
Avatar 3:19pm
Joe B:

hence 1-2-3 Red Light
Avatar 3:19pm
Joe B:

hey Mike! ha yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
Andrew_in_WI:

Will any of these be in more "obscure" languages? Czech, Hungarian, Swahili?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
Woo:

@Gaylord, thanks for that info. I had no idea. I also had no idea this many songs were done in Italian. Between foreign versions and recording Coca-Cola commercials, these bands never got a rest.
Avatar 3:22pm
Joe B:

I wish Andrew. Only one other language will be represented besides the big 3
Avatar 3:24pm
Joe B:

the velvelettes actually spoke french, like Lesley Gore and Petula, hence the better final results!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Mike From Brooklyn:

I'm guessing these bands already had a presence in Europe so it made more sense to try to increase the presence there via a local language version, than to try to break into a new market.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Andrew_in_WI: Haha! No sales market (or possibilities, as in communist Hungary and Czechoslovakia) in many of those countries, and countries that speak Swahili also speak either English or French.
  3:26pm
SledDawg:

So, do you have the English versions of "Sukiaki" or Dominique"? LOL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Andrew_in_WI:

@Gaylord Good point about the Iron Curtain!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
Mike From Brooklyn:

@SledDawg - LOL. On that point, I understand that the song Sukiaki has nothing to do with food, so they'd probably have to give an English version a different title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm
Mike From Brooklyn:

Wanda Jackson's twang sounds great in German!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
Andrew_in_WI:

Love me some Wanda Jackson!
Avatar 3:33pm
Joe B:

@Mike - agreed. she has a few others in german also
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Woo:

A little difficulty getting those words to fit in Ring of Fuego
  3:33pm
SledDawg:

this just sounds weird!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Artie:

Hola, Jose B.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Mike From Brooklyn: "Ue o muite arukou" was initially covered by a British band as an instrumental, and that band renamed it "Sukiyaki" as a familiar word to English speakers — the name stuck in non-Japanese markets even when the Japanese version was released outside Japan.
Avatar 3:35pm
Joe B:

@Mike re markets - yes and no. with a lot of the British artists, the requests came from the record label affiliates in the other countries where the artist was established, or taking off. Motown was the opposite - they were looking to break in, and used this as one of several strategies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Andrew_in_WI:

@Joe B any chance she did a Funnel of Love?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Matt Clarke:

Hey Joey B!
Avatar 3:36pm

andrew not that I am aware of but it could be out there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
Dominick:

Lorne showin' how it's done
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Andrew_in_WI: I would guess it's unlikely, as "Funnel" was the throwaway B-side of the country hit "Right or Wrong" and only gained much-deserved prominence long after its release.
Avatar 3:37pm
Joe B:

the beatles for example - that was requested specifically by Odeon, the emi german label. i always assumed they did it since they had roots there but not the case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
Mike From Brooklyn:

@Joe - Ah ... very interesting.
@Gaylord - Thanks, I'll have to look for Ue o muite arukou.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
Gaylord Fields:

Can anyone tell if Lorne has a Quebecois accent?
Avatar 3:37pm
Joe B:

hey Artie!
Avatar 3:38pm
Joe B:

hey Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Mike Sin:

I'm guessing if the regional affiliates asked for these versions, it was a rather inexpensive affair if the original multi-tracks were at the ready and the artist had some knowledge of the language. If not, the longest part of the process was having someone write out the entire song phonetically!

BeatlesGeek question: Joe -- did you play "Sie Liebt Dich" from the "Rarities" LP. It sounded like that weird stereo mix!
  3:49pm
SledDawg:

Sie Liebt Dich is an entirely new track, but Komm Gib sounds like the original instrumental track remixed with new vocal overdub? You can hear the two lead guitar tracks clearly...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm

Oh nice. Love this Cowsills. Cool they did a foreign language record

Mike it is from the past masters on the 2009 stereo box. Only because i couldn't find my Something New stereo LP!

theme October rolls on next week with Declaration of Dependence: The British Invasion in the 1960s inspired some American bands to rise up and fight their own rock-n-roll revolution. Others turned out to be descendants of Loyalist colonists. Tune in for two hours of British wanna-be band names, terrible fake accents, stolen riffs, valley forgeries and oddities not quite up to snuff.
