Ike: my apartment in Carroll Gardens would get really hot in winter because it was radiator heat. The radiators also tended to make noises occasionally that sounded like the groans of damned souls in hell.

most of the very old places i've lived (not in nyc) also have had steam-based radiator heat. and add to the groans pipes with air making banging sounds. had roomates who had to keep their windows open all winter because of poorly tuned systems
