Good morning Jeff.
Happy New Year to all.9:04am : morning Bob and all!9:04am : Hey Wm. I'm gonna shorten it to: HNY!
Hey Doc Rock9:04am : Good morning, Bob! Coltrane's version of "My Favorite Things" is... well... one of my favorite things. HNY!9:06am : Hey, was that the 45 single edit version?9:06am : Happy New Year @BobB!!! One of my favorite things is to hear your show every Saturday morning...Welcome back!!9:07am : Morning all, Happy New Year!9:07am : perfect production on this one. strings make everything better.9:08am : Good Saturday the 2nd morning, Bob.9:08am : Hey Wendy,
Yeah Jeff, single edit.
Morning DonJuanTijuana, well thank you!
Hey Joe M. & Dale. Hey TDK60.9:09am : When my parents bought our first player, the first tape they had was «my favourite things”. So many memories🥁 9:11am : Is this Doris Troy or a different Doris?9:12am : Morning melinda,
vanya moscow, what a nice memory!9:13am : Doris Svenson, Wm.🥁 9:14am : Ah. It didn't sound like Doris Troy.9:14am : Howdy Bob! Loved that Mike Harrison song!9:16am : That Young Holt number sounded so Ramsey Lewis that it's hard to believe it wasn't.9:17am : Hey marc francis, glad you dug!
Wm. just reading about that 1st Doris Troy album on Apple. George H. produced it and had Peter Frampton play guitar.9:18am : 1whoknewcthulhu, agree! same bass & drums on both!🥁 9:20am : I forgot she had an LP on Apple.9:22am : If not Cruisin' for a Bruisin', then Strainin' for a Brainen?🥁 9:24am : Hello Bob & devotees. H N Y.9:24am : Hey DaveInPA,
Anyone out there get snow?9:25am : Bob, you’re blowing my mind again. In my 66+ years on this planet, I thought I heard everything.9:25am : Snowing up here in Montreal!9:25am : Hiya Brian in UK, HNY to you!9:25am : Snow on the Poker nose9:26am : hello Bob and pals.great to be here.🥁 9:27am : We have had five cold days some with snow. Nothing to stop cars.9:28am : I've just been reading a little bit about Humblebums. I'm reading the David Cavanagh book about John Peel, "Good Night and Good Riddance," and they're mentioned because Peel liked them and played them often.🥁 9:28am : Re Humblebums. Billy Connolly tunes not good?9:31am : Haw! No healthcare for you, lazybonez!🥁 9:31am : Wendy, what do you think of the setup for David Cavanagh's book.🥁 9:36am : I love 45cat.9:40am : Good morning and happy new year, Bob and listeners.9:41am : Good morning and Happy New Yesr to Bob and his listeners. Thanks for the uplifting John Coltrane.Wish the City of Philadelphia would do more to maintain and promote the John Coltrane historical house .9:42am : Brian in UK: I like the format. I've never read a book structured like that before, and I'm interested in different ways of writing. The pacing is good, and it's easy for my brain to absorb and integrate the large amounts on information because it's in short vignettes. What about you?9:44am : morning to you adamdoesit,
HNY Patrick, that would be nice.\Wendy, can you explain structure? An oral history?9:49am : Good morning all and Happy New Year! Really enjoying these first two sets, Bob.9:49am : Man, Judee Sill was so good! If I’m not mistaken, she was the first artist on Asylum. Was supposed to be Laura Nyro but she bailed. David Geffen really had good taste, at one time.9:51am : Bob: What Cavanagh does is structure the book in passages in chronological order, and he uses episodes of John Peel's various radio programs (starting with his time on the pirate-radio ship Radio London, into his long employment with the BBC) as the section headings. So, each section will have the date, a selection of artists Peel played, a few sentences about current events (mostly political), and then a longer narrative about that specific show, Peel's responses/reactions, trends in his music and mic breaks, etc. It's a lot to explain here and I hope I've done it justice.9:52am : Nice Hermits cover. This song suits the Foundations.9:52am : good morning Bob and all. diggin' the noise! all good wishes for the new year9:55am : Hey corey, That's right Jeff. Wendy, that sounds like a great approach.
Hey woo, hey Denny! HNY9:55am : Strings are the thing(s)9:58am : Bob: Yeah, it's great! I tried to find a good review of the book so you could read further about the structure, but most reviews are just trying to write really short versions of Peel's life and influence. They're not reviewing the book. The outlier is this one from the Irish Times; bless them, they know how to review a book: bit.ly...9:58am : Happy new year Bob and all fellow BB fans! Any show that starts off with Trane is bound to be great - and it is! Loving this Asher Gamedze track!10:00am : Thanks TimBrosnan10:01am : My only problem with the book is its predictable and lazy misogyny. The musical taste of housewives is disdained without any examples, and numerous bands are described as music "your girlfriend wouldn't like." Blecch.10:04am : I think I spoke or emailed back and forth with Gene when I did my Warner Bros. Loss Leaders shows.10:05am : GoodMorningGoodMorning and Happy New Year!!10:08am : Hey Uncle Michael, Yeah Gene digs the station. He's a also a fine DJ on luxuria.com and a great writer.
Hey bigplanetnoise!10:08am : Good morning! This is great to wake up to.10:09am : I've got nothing to say, but it's OK
Good morning, good morning10:09am : hii10:09am : Gene was pretty much the editorial voice behind the humor imbued in that series. I spoke to a number of the parties involved. I even got to pick Barry Hansen's brain a bit.10:09am : Bob, i’ve been not so purposefully been timing my saturday morning runs as of late to coincide with the show and it’s just been delightful.10:12am : Elvin Jones! Wow.10:13am : Hey Gina, thanks! Hey YETI BOB, & Yes.10:13am : A force of nature Gina10:14am : agreed re Gene Sculatti, he knows his stuff and is a fine dude. his show Atomic Cocktail is s gas. and he's a big fan of WFMU, indeed10:15am : Good morning from chilly and rainy Seattle. What a great way to wake up; jazzy tunes from Bob Brainen’s playlist.
Happy New Year, Bob and WFMU listeners!10:15am : If i'm not mistaken, the great Billy Cobham played on the Capra Black album as well.10:17am : Is this guy doing Jimmy Reed?10:17am : Hey egould310, Alvy Singer,, you are correct and Warren Smith as well10:17am : Barry Hansen!? UM, what's he doing these days? I knew someone who was his college dorm mate before his Demento days.10:18am : @luka Running to Bob’s show is the best. Looks like I’ll be running to Mike Shelley/Rex today. I’m a little hungover and need to wake up.10:20am : excellent set10:23am : Robert, I have no idea. I didn't take up any of his time beyond the topic he was kind enough to share his thoughts about. He wrote a whole lot of the liner notes for those albums.10:26am : Barry Hansen is such a cool cat. Even helped the band Spirit get off the ground.🥁 10:27am : Some of those Warner Bros. comps have some rare items on them. Van Dyke Parks music for commercials, etc.10:27am : I doubt Spirit would’ve been signed if not for Barry!10:28am : For that alone, Bob, we owe him a deep deep debt!10:29am : Most certainly!10:29am : Wm. agree. some mind blowing stuff on those loss leaders.🥁 10:31am : Nice to hear the Flag. I dig Barry Goldberg's version as well.10:32am : Wm. I featured at least one of those VDP ads when I did my specials. I decided to do the retrospectives when I complete my collection of all the Loss Leader releases. It's been a few years ago.🥁 10:35am : Uncle Michael, did Mr. Hansen come up with the title for Shlagers? And what does it mean?10:36am : Billy Harper is great. Saw him play once, but cannot recall the venue.10:37am : I don't know the answer to that. A "Schlager" is basically what they call big, popular, bombastic hit in Germany. Think Eurovision.10:37am : sup Bob! love Billy Harper and that LP. got to see him some years back10:38am : Daniel related to Barry, Bob?🥁 10:38am : This is really nice. I hadn't heard any of it yet.🥁 10:38am : Thanks Uncle Michael. I've wondered for years.10:39am : Yes - Barry and Holly’s son!10:39am : Good day bob, all.10:39am : It's just the German word for "Hits" but it's acquired a certain connotation - sentimental, easy to sing-along, etc. Not too far from our "Top 40", maybe10:41am : I'm happy to have any Bob answer any of my questions!10:43am : Hahahaha!10:43am : When (and if) things return to normal, check out The Cookers. They’re an all star jazz group with Billy Harper. Great band!10:43am : Hey small change. And he's in the Lee Morgan Doc! He was up on the bandstand at Slugs that fateful night! Damn.
Daniel = what a voice!10:46am : Will do Jeff. I think they'll be a 'Normal" but a different looking landscape for sure!🥁 10:49am : There's a non LP Sal Valentino cut on one of the early Warner Bros. comps that is outstanding.10:51am : What a cool scat track, straddling the border between trombone as voice and voice as horn.10:51am : Thanks for the heads up on the NRBQ show.10:52am : Sure Andrew.10:54am : Pseu played a cut from the new Graham Gouldman album the other day, and now we get to hear 10cc. Now I wanna hear more.10:54am : I recognized this voice and had to check!10:56am : What a beautiful way to begin and end! Thanks Bob10:56am : Thanks so much, Bob! Always brilliant! ❤️10:56am : Wm. Maybe one day I'll do a Loss Leaders Revisted, Revisited.10:57am : Man, what a show! Thanks Bob and skeleton crew for bringing it to us. Enjoy your Saturday everybody.10:57am : Is this where this song got popular in jazz?10:57am : McCoy Tyner, tho...10:57am : Thank you guys10:57am : Thanks, Bob. Thanks, Boneys.🥁 10:57am : Great kick-off for '21 Bob.10:58am : thanks Bob, I'm reminded how good it is to have you back!🥁 10:58am : Thank you!10:59am : Uncle Michael, please do!
Cooh John, yes.
Thanks all!11:00am : Thanks for another great show!!!🥁 11:00am : Sounds good Uncle Michael!11:01am : Bonsoir Mon. BB. Meilluere diffusion de’l Anne11:01am : Thanks, Bob!11:03am : Is "Today" not on a 10cc album? I have all the 10cc and Godley and Creme records, and Hotlegs, and nothing by Festival, but I know this song. Hmmm11:09am : Ah. "Today" is on the Hotlegs album. Question answered.11:52am : OMG. Preston Love. His son is a colleague. I didn't know WFMU had that on the wall. I'll let him know it's up there next time I talk to him.
