Evening Sam. I figure I'll need to ride the horse some too, if that's okay.

The guys in the left of the photo seem to be playing with some old gadget or machine with a wheel and more.

If you're in the NYC area, I hope you've managed to steer clear of the storm tonight.
Avatar 10:11pm
TDK60:

Maybe they're carrying props from a play; it is the theater district.

This is what that location looks like today in the pic ( www.google.com...)

I was wondering if those guys might be valets.

So far the storm was a few minutes of wind followed by an hour of light rain.

This broadcast on the other hand. . . .
  10:16pm

I haven’t seen any storm activity in Queens

These Happy Days are yours and mine, CC! Welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm

@WR and @Gary, I've just seen some general ominousness and wind outside here in Brooklyn. Maybe that'll be the extent of it.

I found this playlist image from the archive of NYC tax photos. If you Google any borough + 1980s tax photos, you can find an archive of images of pretty much every land plot in the city.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Sam Segal:

I think this technique works with other boroughs too.

How's the pay, Ike?

The building on the left, at 145 West 45th, is apparently still standing - and indeed the sign would be for the recently deceased O'Lunney's pub, itself also quite old but yet another victim of the pandemic
Avatar 10:27pm
Constantly Choking:

damn, time goes by quick, rip JR
  10:28pm
headcleaner:

About the pub's owner, from the Irish Echo: "Hugh O’Lunney, known widely and equally in the Irish American community for his hospitality, generosity and commitment to a united Ireland, has died after losing his battle with cancer."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Sam Segal:

@CC, just checked and I was off by one year. He died in 2010. Still feels like so much more recently than that. RIP indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Sam Segal:

How-do-you-do, rw?
Avatar 10:31pm
Constantly Choking:

@Sam gonna spin Blood Visions at 12 now
  10:33pm
headcleaner:

Stop the presses! O'Lunney's indeed had a long history, but at various other addresses in the neighborhood (it moved to the 145 West 45th address long after the tax photo was taken). So the sign is for some other "-y's" establishment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Sam Segal:

It's too late, headcleaner. The story's gone to press. We'll have to issue a formal correction next week.
  10:36pm

@Sam: I just hope I can keep my job as a self-starting, meticulous compiler of useless information

Your job is safe as long as I'm around, headcleaner. Rest assured.
Avatar 10:43pm

@headcleaner: My hole in that hood was the Holland bar on 30th and 9th (around the corner from my office).
Avatar 10:44pm
northguineahills:

(Mostly septegenarians and young overworked kids).
Avatar 10:46pm
TDK60:

The building in this old photo and the one in a new street photo of O'Lunney's is the same.
Avatar 10:47pm
northguineahills:

oh, and from the lore of the ancient bartender, Bill, Holland Bar was across the street from the Port Authority until the floor collapsed, and they had to move in '94. (I believe there's a Turkish restaurant at the former location.)
Avatar 10:47pm
northguineahills:

@TDK: But the alley is gone.
Avatar 10:50pm
TDK60:

Yes. The sign may've been replaced or altered.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
WR:

that's not an alley, a parking lot where once there was a building and so now a building again.
  10:53pm
headcleaner:

ah, the Holland Bar. My (NYC-based) romance with alcohol started a bit late, so I only know the gutted reincarnation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Sam Segal:

If anyone's curious to explore more tax photos from 1980s Manhattan, this is the database I pulled the photo from. nycma.lunaimaging.com...

Some mayoral candidate made a reference to theoretical crime in alleys in NYC during the Democratic debate and I was like WHAT ALLEYS?!? (Maybe there are some alleys in neighborhoods I'm not familiar with, though, like far upper Manhattan?)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
WR:

and I am off to sleep a bit early tonight. Long day tomorrow. Thank you Sam and riders on the stream. Laters.
Avatar 10:58pm
northguineahills:

Lower Manhatan is full of alleys.... (no crime, though).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Sam Segal:

Only alleys I've come across are in Ridgewood, Queens. Maybe other areas of Queens have alleys too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Sam Segal:

Sleep well, WR!
Avatar 11:00pm
Ike:

Almost anytime you see a NYC-set TV show or movie with an alley, you know it's Vancouver, Toronto, or L.A. Unless it's Cortlandt Alley, one of the few alleys in Manhattan that I know of. They love to film there. (I probably don't know lower Manhattan exhaustively enough to know the other ones. I know Banksy hit one once.)
Avatar 11:00pm
Ike:

Or maybe that was a narrow street. Which is what Cortlandt Alley is, really.
  11:00pm
headcleaner:

Tribeca's got quite a few, but now they're white-collar, rather than blue-collar crime alleys. Picturesque as ever, though
  11:02pm

BTW if you're an alley hound, here's a city for you: Philadelphia

There are a lot of little streets in Lower Manhattan; don't know if they were formerly alleys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

Hello, Able Coel!
  11:05pm

Center City is crisscrossed with them, from river to river A lot of these are remnants of the 18th century street grid. When 8 feet or so was a perfectly decent width for a street.
