I'd gladly take weasels, spodi. My mom fell and broke her hip, which ironically was the good news. She had fallen victim to a scam that included actions from her like sending $18,000 to a vacant building in New York, granting the scammer remote access to her computer, sending account numbers to the dude (accounts which I am also on, incidentally), sending her SSN to the guy, getting ransomware and spyware on her computer and router, among other things. We were able to recover the money and prevent further damage (we think). Had my mom not fallen, we would've not found out about what she did until waaaayyy too late. Been pretty much 5 days of hell. had a friend fall prey to scammers on his computer (i helped him recover and understand what had happened... to thank me, he ended up blaming me causing computer getting hijacked (he's a sucker, and a thankless one at that)... and my father had his own gf walk him into his bank to steal about as much (when he was deep into his dementia) ... what fun. anyway, hope everything is under control as possible now on your end.

spodi, your friend sounds like my brother. When my son moved to sf, my brother would regularly call him to fix his computer, etc. My son soon stopped answering his calls.

that sucks, spodi. -something my father would do. (and i think did do, chasing his long-time and only friend left out of his life)

@Mary I got a call to meet her at the hospital Saturday morning after she had fallen. The ER was out of rooms, so they had her on a gurney in the hallway and while we were waiting for an assignment I asked her why she was at the UPS store in the first place. She said she messed up and had sent $2000 to fix an account that had been hacked. She said that she had gone to the police and they were able to stop the delivery but she needed to stop at the store and get a receipt, and that's when she fell. She did not reveal any of the other stuff until my BIL picked up the package and noticed it was significantly than was needed for $2K. Once he saw that it was actually 18K, he started digging into her computer and that's when we discovered all the damage.

chresti, sounds like it. i used to fear visiting friends and relatives (i'd end up spending visiting time fixing M$ Windoze woes) eventually i took the "I don't do windows" way out more than not

My jerkweed brother-in-law scammed my dear mother out of about $75k over the years. I think she settled out of court for about ten cents on the dollar. Ugh! My mom isn't in dementia, just gullible. Less now than she was before, anyway.

coelacanth, man, why are people so hard-headed? i feel like one such friend has done the same to me in the past year. (and i'm guessing he's claiming the same... idk. but it's very frustrating.)

i'd like to make some kind of better peace, but he's stopped communicating with me completely (and done some aggro things that make it really hard to stomach it all)... decades of friendship, tossed aside. (imho for pride)

he's got plenty of friends though.

my mother's a hardass, always has been. when i've expressed concern about the possibility of her getting scammed she got defensive like i'm doubting her hardassness! i just have to hope she stays aware.
...but i do think she got scammed by the dentist.

Lots of crazy family stories out there!
Really difficult to deal with aging parents when they are losing some cognitive function slowly, and don't believe they are (the story of my late mom). In that case, her fall and hip fracture was also a blessing in a way, as she had to stop driving, and we were able to keep her from starting again when she had healed.
Thanks, Mary! (gotta run, dental torture time)
