Hello, all! The chances of anyone guessing the identity of today's LP-under-the-cassettes are virtually nil, so I'll just give the game away: it's this Russian comp: www.discogs.com...

Good morning! I feel kind of bad about it, but the sound of Matt W saying, "Don't touch that dial" has become my cue for touching the dial.

Ha! Was just thinking about the not punk guitar. My memory isn't great but there seemed to be a moment in the mid '80s when the punk scene started embracing Black Sabbath, etc. in a bigger way.
  12:17pm
rw:

And maybe vice-versa with speed metal.

Dean:

Pre-Black Flag we were treated to Middle Class's 1979 "Out of Vogue" EP, which some regard as the advent of hardcore (which isn't precisely metal, I know), even though the rest of Middle Class's output was more post-punk than metal.

Ha! I may have seen Middle Class more than any other band. Was friends with Mike P. back in olden times and went to many shows. Might have even been at that Al's gig!

Did you also know Kim from Channel 3, rw? I worked at a record store in Whittier with his older sister.

Dean, no, but ran a little bit on the edges of that crowd. We probably have a few old friends in common.
  12:31pm

I didn't know Kim at all, though I dug the first album. My crowd was Flipside for a time. The first issue featured Rusty Anderson's band, Eulogy. I knew Mark and Paul Kostabi, regular visitors to the record store.

I know nothing of the West Coast Middle Class y'all are writing about. will have to investigate. Big Planet Noise feature the NJ Myddle Class of the 60s last night and some people mentioned they knew of the West Coast Middle Class but not the Myddle Class. I am in reverse status.

Hey coel!

Dean, you may remember there was a vintage furniture, knick-knack store in Fullerton called Out of Vogue. It was run by Mike A (Middle Class) and his wife. Mike passed away a few years ago and the store is now closed. Saw Channel 3 in Kansas City when I was in college. Crazy show.

@ Rich: How's the Vancouver (WA) record store situation these days? There used to be a few OK stores, but I haven't visited them in years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
Rich in Washington:

There's only one I can vouch for, and that's Everybody's Music near McLoughlin Blvd. Lots of used vinyl in weekly and he puts new stuff in a 'new arrival' bin for quick perusal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
Rich in Washington:

The only other store is just OK. For some weird reason known only to them, they refuse to put new arrivals in a dedicated area, rather they dump it all in general population so a regular visitor would have to flip through the entire store to find anything 'new'.
Avatar 2:15pm

Avatar 2:16pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Nick! Glad you like it! (You're a drummer, no?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm

Dumb gripe, I know, but I never go to that store for that reason except to buy poly bags or inner sleeves (they're cheaper there).
Avatar 2:17pm
Tony Coulter:

What store is it? It would all be new to me....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm
Rich in Washington:

It's called 1709 Records, on Broadway. The name is its house address. Mainly new releases, pricey reissues, etc. but a few odd used records. They 'inherited' most of Sonic Recollections' inventory.
They're nice enough people, just have some peculiar ideas of what a record store does, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
chresti🎾:

Yes, enjoing the percussive comp! Thanks Tony!
Avatar 2:25pm

@ Rich: Interesting. I used to go to Sonic Recollections all the time. They were really near me. Combed through it very thoroughly during their final weeks, tho, so probably didn't miss much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm

yeah. I also used to visit that one often. There wasn't much interesting stuff by the time he closed. I always liked that guy.

Wasn't sure if I would, but I recognized the Miracle, haha! Good stuff as always, Tony! That first comp was fascinating in the way it brought together a bunch of different styles prevalent in the "underground" at the time, finishing up with some obligatory punk, haha!
