It took a while to get the Halloween voice back this year. It's cross between Ghoulardi and a vampire... but not a very good one.

While this is not exactly the story that people associate with Edgar Allen Poe, I have a sort of fondness for it, since it is a Seafaring story, and I'm sort of a sucker for the open sea.

isn't this the one that came true?

A lot of Poe's stories had some element of truth, often. He ran with some odd folks.

I'll say it in the chat: we are in the middle of our Hellraiser Fundraiser. We're already 38% of the way toward meeting the goal for Dimestore Radio Theater this month, so if you can afford it, click the "Pledge Now" banner at the top of this page, and you'll be able to make a donation in the amount that makes the most sense. It helps keep community radio available to the masses!

The good thing about picking horror shows for Halloween is that I can pick an episode of a show that aired in March, or some other month, and it still works for Halloween.

β€˜Twas an actor named Alan Reed who was the voice of Fred Flintstone. Do you have a cast list for this show handy, Austin?

There's the best "regular cast" list I could find. But that doesn't mean Alan Reed didn't guest on an episode:

Gladys Thornton
Audrey Totter,
Chester Stratton
Eleanor Audley,
Arnold Moss,
Lawson Zerbe
Walter Vaughn
Regis Joyce
Fred Barron

That Halloween Stomp album, while it came out in 1990, is a collection of vintage spooky music from the 40's and 30's. It's a great collection for this time of year.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Austin Rich:

"Count Ghoulardi" will certainly be with us all month. If I can keep the voice going.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Austin Rich:

"The Price of Fear" is the most recent radio broadcast to appear on Dimestore Radio Theater. This show ran from 1973 to 1983, and since it was an English show, it only produced 22 episodes. In spite of the newer vintage, the BBC heritage, and the fact that these episodes are still aired on the BBC to this day around "the holiday season," the recording quality of all the episodes that are easy to find is not the best. I did some EQ, and noise reduction, but regardless, "The Price of Fear," still sounds a little funky.
  9:35pm
Charles:

No problem Austin, I'm sure you'd be fine with some Acme brand throat surgery.

To me, listening to Vincent Price stories around Halloween seems like tradition. I remember listening to horror stories read by him as a kid, and I usually try to fit something in during October.
Avatar 9:39pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Vincent Price should be a traditional Halloween staple in all homes.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:40pm

Some put up images of Santa around Christmas. We try to put up images of Mr. Price, and watch those Hammerhorror films he did.
Avatar 9:40pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

What do you think of his more modern roles. Such as the post deliverer in Escapes?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Austin Rich:

He's pretty charming, all the way to the end. I'm trying to think of something I didn't like. Nothing comes to mind. I'm sure there's some drek in there somewhere; he made a LOT of movies.
  9:42pm
Charles:

Hearing Vincent Price during halloween season is good for the soul.

Avatar 9:46pm
Mr Fab:

He was always great, even if he was in a stinker. He ELEVATED that shit.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Austin Rich:

This show really leans into the "cheapness," which was certainly a hallmark of BBC productions. The star, does 90% of the dialog, there's a minimum of music and SFX, and if you just make the dialog eerie, then it really works on the radio.

But the... cheapness does stand out, compared to some of the other shows we've heard, that were made earlier.
Avatar 9:46pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

No matter how bad the role, he took it seriously and gave it his all.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Austin Rich:

True. I think that's what's appealing; he's ALWAYS firing on all cylinders, even in small parts.

He does the voice of, "The Saint," on the radio, a show where a playboy gets into adventures and has to solve problems for others. He's magnificent in that role, but the other voice actors that do it after him just never manage to nail it.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Austin Rich:

Marla and I were talking about how we need to shift of programming to "halloween" fare, now that it is October, and the first movie we talked about was, "House on Haunted Hill," which is think is required Halloween viewing.
Avatar 9:54pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

I have both versions of House on Haunted Hill, plus the Riff of the original.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:54pm

Oooof. My chat-room typeos are just awful. Many apologies. I guess that's how you know I'm not a bot.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:55pm

House on Haunted Hill is a stone-cold classic. And talk about a movie that hangs on Vincent's charm. Him and Elisha Cook Jr. are pretty much chewing all imaginable scenery in that mansion.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Austin Rich:

Funny factoid about the show "Biography" that I learned today: this show began in 1961, and was originally hosted by Mike Wallace. The show has been re-launched by a number of people over the years, but didin't really last until A&E bought the property in 1987, and made Peter Graves the host. That's the version I saw a TON of in High School and just after.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Austin Rich:

But I never knew of the older version of the show, until today.
Avatar 10:16pm

Peter Graves sounds like the person who did the audio book of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

The backing music in this "Poe" biography show is VERY repetitive.

It would be a nice addition to the lounge, that isn't a lava lamp or comic books.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Austin Rich:

Of course this was a Hearst idea to do this radio feature.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:33pm

As usual, the "Ghost Painter" turns out to be merely a scam. This is like Scooby Doo before Scooby Doo.
Avatar 10:34pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

A scam with a twist
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Austin Rich:

Now, while this "scam" seems plausible, and there really isn't a ghost, my research suggests that nearly all the stories in "Front Page Drama!" were made up by a writer. At least, I think it would be hard to corroborate any of these stories, which only adds to the confusion.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Austin Rich:

Radio is the perfect format for someone TALKING DIRECTLY TO YOU, but a lot of drama shows come up with the most ridiculous contrivances so that the actors would be telling you all sorts of exposition. But in you just have the main character address the audience directly, you suddenly save a LOT of exposition. He can just tell you outright.

"Cathead"?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:51pm

I think working class stories like this went a long way toward building an audience among the people that were displaced after WWII. A lot of these folks came home to having more free time and technology making life easier than before the war. And they could relate to these working class characters stumbling across strange circumstances, which I'm sure is how post-war America felt.

I knew that "cathead" was a sailing term, but I guess drilling derricks used a lot of sailing terms, when they got started. (A lot of the people working on derricks had been sailors previously.)

Here's the definition of "cathead":

"A horizontal beam extending from each side of a ship's bow, used for raising and carrying an anchor."

My guess is a Cathead is used to raise things to the upper parts of the derrick.
