Amazing how rare and expensive salt was in Stevenson's day
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
Austin Rich:

While Robert Louis Stevenson was sort of better known for his adventure novels (Treasure Island and Kidnapped, which are both excellent), this was probably his other literary high point. Given the horrific content of the story, the character has been re-interpreted in a number of ways over the years. This version sort of compacts the story in a number of ways, but still works pretty well.

Peter Lorre?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Austin Rich:

I don't think so, but possibly? A lot of people were doing Peter Lorre impressions for "scary" performances on radio.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Austin Rich:

He does a sort of slow version of the "voice transformation" gag that Bud Collyer used to morph from his "Clark Kent" voice to his "Superman" voice. This is a creepier version, to be sure.

Men at Work
  9:28pm
Heather:

I know that one, Imaginos, but haven't heard it in years!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Austin Rich:

Mr. Hyde is a character in Alan Moore's "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," where Dr. Jekyll was able to escape the fate of the novel, and was used in extreme situations, when the group needed a "heavy hitter." I do love those Alan Moore comics, but they do a number on my ability to actually remember the actual stories of the novels.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm

Ah, I see. Men At Work! Heather's a huge fan of them, so I hear.

Austin Rich:

Again, I recommend this CD, a collection of OG Halloween music from the 30's and 40's. (Much of it instrumental.) Perfect if you host an old time radio show and need some transition music...
  9:33pm
Heather:

Hi! I was a big big fan when I was a kid! Now I'm not a not fan but I don't hear MAW regularly. Maybe I should??

If we're doing Halloween music recs, I have this awesome Nuggets Halloween set that has some really great stuff! That and Eban Schletter's Witching Hour. Phew. That's a real goodie.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Austin Rich:

I'll second that Halloween Nuggets collection. Really choice selections.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

There's a bit of an English Accent sub-theme this week! Though in "The Price of Fear," it's actual English people, as this show was produced in the UK.
  9:37pm
Heather:

Eban Schletter also has, like, Tales of the Frightened, I think the title is. Longer form stories scored by ES. Appropriate stuff for this show, even!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Austin Rich:

Humorously, whoever archived this show did not do the best job, as they all sound like they were recorded in the 40's, rather than in 1983, as was the case for this episode.
Avatar 9:38pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

I'm learning new things tonight. I love it!
Avatar 9:40pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Back in the 90s the BBC announced that they were looking for amateur recording of their lost shows.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
Austin Rich:

I may have mentioned this last week, but "The Price of Fear" ran for 10 years on the BBC, and they would release a couple new episode every year or so. (They may have been recorded all at once, or at different times. I'll need to do more research to figure that out.)

But this show continues to be re-run on the BBC to this day, around this time of year.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Austin Rich:

This episode has Price in a much lighter role, really only being the narrator. One of the strange qualities to this show is that Vincent was IN the story as often as he was just "Observing."
Avatar 9:44pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Cat's Cradle and Speciality of the House are great examples of Price featured episodes

It sounds like Poe was a HARSH critic. I should find a collection of his writing like that.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Austin Rich:

Poe was a creepy older guy.
  10:11pm
Heather:

Shudder.... yeah.... 13..... ai.....
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Austin Rich:

It also sounds like Poe really LIVED that "drunken author" trope. I don't know if I could drink that hard. It hurts!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Austin Rich:

He certainly lived in an era where a lot of people did creepy things and no one batted an eye. But even then, they knew they had to hide that she was too young because... she was too young. That's a little further than usual.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Austin Rich:

I still love a lot of his stories, but like a lot of people in horror, Poe is pretty problematic.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Austin Rich:

He did loose a lot of people to illness, and he was ignored and left with no resources by his family. So certainly he struggled his whole life.

Still, you don't have to be a creepy weirdo. I'm not sure one follows from the other.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Austin Rich:

This episode of "Front Page Drama" marks the oldest recorded show that has appeared on Dimestore Radio Theater so far.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm

Conversely, the episode of "The Price of Fear" we aired is the most recent piece of radio we've aired.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

"A werewolf is a vampire." Okay, so this scientist is not to be trusted.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Austin Rich:

"Vampire Werewolves." This doctor is drunk.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Austin Rich:

So his daughter is a werewolf, I guess?
  10:31pm
Heather:

That or he's watching The Vampire Diaries franchise!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Austin Rich:

I think in all of the classical texts I've studied - The 1930's Universal Horror Films - vampires were separate from werewolves. Combining them would require some sort of modern-day sensibility that defies all of my old-timey conventions!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Austin Rich:

I will say, in all seriousness, Heather has studied FAR MORE vampire texts than I, and therefore, is the expert. I will defer.
  10:35pm
Heather:

I've only ever seen the vampire/werewolf combo in The Vampire Diaries shows and that.... well, why, especially, did I watch that whole thing?! Jeesh.

Less text, more TV! You know me and those CW shows!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Austin Rich:

I can argue that first Dracula novel by that Stoker dude pretty well. (I wrote a paper or two on it in college.) But I'm really not well versed in "vampires" outside of that.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Austin Rich:

(I mean, I watched Buffy, but... you know.)
  10:37pm
Heather:

No Anne Rice for you?! Not even in the 90s??
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Austin Rich:

This story from "Quiet Please" seems, to me, the most "Lovecraft" inspired of his stories, but a lot of Willys Cooper's stories for Quiet Please have a touch of that kind of tale. I can't find specific evidence to support it, but I have a feeling that Willys Cooper was a big Lovecraft fan.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Austin Rich:

I read some Anne Rice back in the day, for sure. But I feel like there was a lot of more emphasis on the sex scenes and on Lestat's band, and not so much on vampire lore.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Austin Rich:

I like it when actors try to pretend that they don't know how to "talk" into a "microphone." ("I'm not an announcer.") It's always delivered in a way that almost immediately disproves the idea that they are trying to pretend they don't know what they're doing.
  10:43pm
Heather:

Anne Rice has her place in pop culture history, absolutely, but it was pretty sensational stuff. That I should revisit, really!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Austin Rich:

You know they're remaking those books, I think as a TV show?

There's already two episodes out. It's on AMC. (The same service that will carry the new Max Headroom show.) AMC usually does good stuff, and they have the money to make good shows.
