@zzz, did you make it to the Tortoise show on Sunday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
zzz:

i was just going to ask you the same question! it had no idea they were playing but a friend was seeing pavement on saturday and mentioned 75 dollar bill opening, which led me to the listing of tortoise. managed to get a ticket and made it out! you??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Sam Segal:

Wow, I feel like I should've been hyping that gig more actively on the show! But by some kind of luck or divine intervention, you still made it. I was there too. They blew me away! That was my first time seeing them live. 75 Dollar Bill was also excellent...cool to see them with James McNew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
zzz:

nice! also first time seeing them live.
loved it. was cool to see all the instrument rotations, was surprised by how incredibly loud they were at times! also didn’t realize doug mccombs does twangy surf/western guitar parts.

Tcheser Holmes w/75dollar bill was also a huge treat

@Sam: I got flooded out. I'm in temporarily housing in a nearly finished room on a second floor w/o a closet, half the size of my old space, and w/ grout still on the floor and the baseboards in need of a paint job. I was w/o power for 36 hours. the internets here is not as solid as my old spot, but satisfactory.

yeah, running back to volunteer at the shelter w/ no power w/ people on the floor of the cafeteria while trying to keep chaos from ensuing (these were people not accustomed to shelters) was interesting. I ended up finding a generator, a floodlight, and my laptop to keep tabs on our regular clients by myself, who helplfully, were much better behaved. I was doing that 12pm-12am two days in a row, that was fun.(while worrying about/cleaning up after my residence).

Best of luck, ngh, among the close and all-around extreme disruptions and demands, and...whatever's a better, more suitable word of credit and respect than "kudos," for your constructive extra assistance efforts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm

Good on you for putting in all that work at the shelter. I'm sure they need all the help they can get.

I Googled "storm resistant housing" earlier today. There are techniques and standards, of course, some imposed after ass-kickings in earlier Florida storms, but I've just been thinking "Jesus, there's GOTTA be more ways to reduce that explosive shattering and obliterating of stick-built houses, to reduce those losses and impacts." It's a hurricane and you can't have a wide full win against it, but could there ever be much MORE intense eagerness and enforcement, more common practices in construction and styles, to fully recognize and reduce risks?
Avatar 11:32pm
northguineahills:

@Sam: I slept 16 hours yesterday. when i was still catatonic thursday, i got a call from someone who djs music at some town called jersey city. that really helped me through my ordeal.

At least I have shelter. the pond behind the property of my old place flooded 10 ft over its banks, the whole neighborhood behind it was flooded out, and i know, being a lower income neighborhood, they don't have insurance. There are families and elderly still living in school gymnasiums. Meanwhile, my old place should be ready to move back into by nov 1 (just saw the place earlier this evening and it was fully gutted, the landlord had insurance).
Avatar 11:34pm
northguineahills:

We got 15 inches of rain, and just 3.5 inches b/tn 4-5am when the storm hit us... (oh, yeah, there was wind, buy that just knocked trees over, billboards, electric pylons, etc)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Sam Segal:

This Jersey City town sounds like it's got some solid souls! Good to hear you're going to be able to get into a fully renovated place in a somewhat reasonable time. I hope the time in your current place goes by quickly.

Hey just got here. Found some cool stuff online about algae and mental health - might be some stuff to look forward to. Probably other stuff too but in a story I was writing that was the cure.

Company in Nova Scotia builds homes with plastic bottles recycled into thick panels that reportedly stand up to beyond-hurricane winds in controlled tests. Couldn't find info on how those structures (they haven't completed many) just fared a week and a half ago in Fiona, worst storm ever to hit the region.

Avatar 11:46pm
northguineahills:

the construction industry in fl is very parochial, and is not to make any sudden changes in building materials. it's an established chain all the way from material, to builders, to developers, to political zoning, the state level incentives to "develop everything no matter the case, oh and to make everything as uniform and bland as possible whie they're at it...
  11:46pm
Pi(e):

It starts with sleep - which is the cue for which our society has adopted a mental health leaning - which is very real - “I shall continue” - I proclaim in thought - and then there is a whole subtext and aimoiltaneous “shift” of “theirs and ours” (from a wholistic scientific lens) and the psychomyopathical state of being can be seen unveiled and released. And as this unexplored area expands and becomes explored the developmental nature of self and “our time” will substantiate itself. Much like the sheet of what we see as the moon unturning to show its face - the perspective of which our science is “lost” - can share infinite light and wisdom to another (which is dream like but I do believe that is how
Some stuff starts/works) - and then it’s possibly going to be taken from the organic state to the laboratory state. So more work is going to hopefully be done and hopefully much light/knowledge/truth/love/information will rain down upon us. Elemental but it’s alright - we might come from the embryonic (a pickup of an old Flaming Lips song)
  11:47pm
Pi(e):

I didn’t proof read that. Hopefully it’s close to what I said/meant - phones been acting.

It was pretty close! “aimoiltaneous“ I have never seen this word in my life.
  11:54pm

Simultaneously was what I meant - which really what I’m saying is it’s just like a Passover of generations (leaving Passover capitalized).
