Ridgewood: since I arrived late you have already addressed this: what do you make of the “melodies but not songs” phenomenon? It’s not brand new but… is it becoming increasingly a favored approach?

There is a little trend of adding written bits or pitch sets into what might otherwise be a free improv set. This is not new but is appearing with younger players who have been mostly blowing free.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
DJ Peter:

↳ david w @6:09
I like this insight! I think you’re describing a distinct approach to the improvisation/composition paradox. The AACM had their own way of addressing it, but you’ve put your finger on a different “solution”? Maybe a post-modernist one? Full of pastiche? (The Halvorson/Courvoisier performance seems to be built around Claude Thornhill’s “Snowfall”)

I don’t want to speak for David… but I’m inferring that the distinction is between “something written” (melody) and “a form that we are improvising on” (song).

I don't think it's a new thing shopping bits of melody to free improv. Sure, there's been totally improvised musicall along (since "free" became a thing), but there we're always since who had "heads), little themes sprinkled in, I like when I have that to hang on to.
