I think the entire Star Wars franchise has a lot of slippage and squidgy thinking about the sentience of droids vs. their servitude. They can give them laugh lines -- even agency -- but still treat them as property. It's just an area that the franchise seems to not want to look at too closely.

Frankenstein is also a fav char of mine, but I equate ot more with biological tech hubris… “middle school” level of criticism: man vs nature. Ofc it was so timely as it was published around the time of Tesla and private scientific “societies”, electricity endemic to its character…. Also ironically, there was a cartoon featuring a giant robot good guy dubbed Frankenstein Jr. from the late 60s done by Hanna Barbara (Gigantor rip-off, also) using their trope of a teenage rock band of crime fighters… using a “super” character: Scooby Doo the talking dog I think being the first, talking dune buggy, u frozen caveman, etc… From Wiki:

Frankenstein Jr.: Taking place in Civic City, boy scientist Buzz Conroy (voiced by Dick Beals) and his father Professor Conroy (voiced by John Stephenson) fight supervillains with the aid of a powerful heroic robot named "Frankenstein Jr." (voiced by Ted Cassidy).[3] Buzz built "Frankie" and activated him through an energy ring. Frankenstein Jr. appears to be reminscient of the anime character Tetsujin 28-go (also known as Gigantor).[4]

Mark ... about your comment about ... whether kids are learning about sentences (subject, verbs, etc) ... I "visited" one of my son's junior high classes when he was in junior high (approximately 1998) ... I learned, by sitting in the class for 20 minutes ... that the teacher had NO control over the class. The "good students" were sitting in the front rows. The back rows (approx 12 students) ... were totally not paying attention, and were often disruptive. I went home and cried because I knew and realized that ... this was "normal". The world is definitely different than when I was in junior high.
