Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from November 5, 2024 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

For these "Somewhere In-Between" segments, I found a dramatized "Guy Fawkes" video online, and added some music, samples, and goofy "narration." That was a fun show to make, but I'm glad I'm on Sheena now, instead.

I'm a sucker for MTX and Dr. Frank. While this album is certainly more in the punk mode, not much after this he would go through a huge Kinks phase, where he must have been listening to them more, because his songwriting gets a LOT better after that.

For a few years, in the 2000's, my show was an all "Nuggets" program. Almost all 60's rock music, with little variation. I'm still a huge fan of this kind of rock music, and I'd say the first two volumes of the Nuggets series are ABSOLUTELY essential compilations.

The playwright Ben Jonson (who accompanied Shakespeare on his last night on the town, when Will fatally overdrank) was instrumental in the exposure of the Gunpowder Plot.
Years earlier, some legal technicality saved him from being executed for a homicide; but his thumb was branded with a T to identify him as a first offender.

Yeah, the book is far superior to the film. The film sort of "bludgeons" you with the ideas from the comic. There's a few good bits, but I like it for samples more than anything.

I saw them 40 years ago and have heard most of their records, but I never knew of this song until now.
The title’s an English translation of the band’s name. Last I checked, the game by that name was still sold in American toy stores.

Judging by his size, I assumed Paddington was a cub.
There were a lot of those books. Did he ever grow up and eat the human family that adopted him?

My paperback collections showed me that its first years were pretty good (Johnny “B.C.” Hart and Brant Parker created the strip in 1964), but it had declined by the time I discovered it in newspapers. I think Hart abandoned it early on.
It made an impression on Lee Hazelwood, whose 1966 song “In Our Time” (sang by Nancy Sinatra) has the line “Mickey Mouse ain't no kid since he read the Wizard of Id”.

I didn't really listen to Joy Division until I was in my early 30's. There was one winter where I just listened to them, and Sisters of Mercy, and Portishead. It was the first time I really bonded with those bands.

I was a fan of that comic, so I bonded hard with that movie and soundtrack, as a late teen / early 20 something. That movie sort of holds up, though I gather the production of the movie was terrible, in a number of ways.

There were at least two or three people in New Orleans circa 2004, when I went there who were apparently wrong about the hotel room where Johnny Thunders died. There was a consensus that came down to the room number, which happened to be the room of the hotel I was staying in. For the longest time, I believed that I stayed in the room that Johnny Thunders died in, but after looking online twenty years later, I found that it wasn't even the right hotel.
