Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Today you wouldn't know it was ever a zone of anything, certainly not of the tawdry, raw and dangerous. A lot of Emerson College kids live at its former edge, and redevelopment in and near it has recast it. It ain't all polished, but it sure ain't the Pilgrim Theater and Naked I.

although it has its pluses, i guess. one of my earliest memories of college is reading a story in the boston phoenix about someone in roxbury or dorchester (both then still rough in 1987) picking up used condoms around her building with folded paper plates. less of that can't be bad.
