Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from September 26, 2014 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I was in Vermont for Thanksgiving with friends many years ago. One evening over the weekend, we went to a bar popular with the ski tourists and there was this really awful ersatz reggae band playing the joint to wild whoops and hollers. It was the Hackney brothers. Had no knowledge of Death until a huge story came out in the New York Times a year or two later.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Alex In Illinois:

In Chicago, we are so used to excessive political ads, that we tune them out. So all of the absurdly early political ads have made the current ones more ignorable. What I don't like are the robo calls we receive, especially the ones from Americans for Prosperity trying to get my father-in-law who died last year to register.
  12:32pm
Mary Jo:

AH you are funny...it was great to be there. C'mon dedicate a song to him...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm

Anyway, what I was trying to get at was that the too-early political ads immunized us against the ones that are now playing.

I've only seen one, when at the gym, on their TVs. I'm lucky in not having cable or listening to a lot of commercial radio, but I suspect the lawn signs for our local congressman, and for the poor bastard with the unenviable task of trying to unseat said congressman, will be sprouting soon. Plus I live a 4-minute walk from my polling place, and they plant the signs as close to it as they legally can, so it's a political Superfund site through early Nov.

ALLRIGHT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
Alex In Illinois:

If you use a hollow string reel for your kite string, and you have the full length of the line let out, then the reel acts as a resonator with the wind playing the kite string so you have a musical instrument, with cool sounds emanating from the reel. That makes kite flying much more fun and interesting. I have not done that in years, but if I do, I should try to record the wind song somehow.

I have a confession to make. I was "tripping balls" as the kids say, the first time I heard this track.

Trying to remember if I've heard this cover before. Must have somewhere along the line. Very cool.

For years, hearing the most played recording of this, I thought the lyrics were, "Wha? Jesus! It's just a shadow, it's just a shadow."
