Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from March 31, 2017 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

In 1971? I did not have access to pop music yet. Maybe records off of cereal boxes, but my folks did not listen to pop music. I did not know that there were other radio stations on transistor radios other than KMOX, and I our stereo was always tuned to KFUO, a classical station.

@glenn i sort of botched the story. what happened was that the washington senators *had* moved to texas, and then there was a move to take the padres and sell them to a guy in washington d.c. so topps went ahead and printed cards with the washington imprimatur. but then ray kroc stepped in and kept the padres in s.d.

I feel like there is some sort of Van Exhaustion out there, missing the forest (much of his catalog) for the Brown-Eyed trees. Or maybe I'm just overly influenced by @βrian's commentary.

Like the Dead, VM is hella prolific. He's bound to generate a spectrum of opinions, and naturally exhaustion will play among them. Although I grew up hearing him on FM radio, my favorite record of his is Into the Music. Thereafter I kinda lost interest.

Same here, the early few albums really resonated, he got mystical, I got less involved.

Indeed, @johnk77, the same. Pat Bag, the bass player, used to drop by the record store where I worked. Likewise, I'd drop by the department store cosmetics counter where she worked. Alice wrote and toured an autobiography a few years ago. I need to read it.
