There really are jackhammers next door but I'm pretty sure the mic is down.... it's the Bellerue magic mixture!

Stanley:

Hi David. I was just thinking that nowadays I find listening to stuff like this far more preferable to any other 'entertainment'. My partner says I'm weird. (A small price to pay)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Stanley:

When I mean 'entertainment' I mean teevee, films, reading etc.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
weinstein:

Stanley, I'd like to say you are not weird. But then again....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
Doug Schulkind:

It's an extra vaganza.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
fred:

@Stanley: I tend to think it's better to be called weird than boring. Especially by your partner
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Webhamster Henry:

I've been tending away from musical works that have perceivable beginnings, endings, rhythms, melodies, or harmonies. I'm not quite ready to give up timbre.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
weinstein:

I've lived with "weird" so long.. you know, let your freak flag fly kind of thing. It has become comfortable.
Avatar 3:58pm
northguineahills:

I somehow never came across Bob Bellerue. Nice stuff...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:58pm

I'm not sure timbre is negotiable, wouldn't the universe just evaporate?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
Stanley:

Thanks Fred. I love music like this, it's a joy to be able to hear it played to me like this show (and others on this station)
Avatar 4:11pm
Ike:

Universes are negotiable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
fred:

Timbre is kind of a weird word. I've heard it said in at least three different ways, and I have so idea which one is right. In addition, google translating it from French tends to yield stamp, adding to the confusion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
coelacanth∅:

regarding earlier conversation about being "weird" - i used to have a friend who used to get to the point of tears about being mocked on or shunned for being weird. having been quite used to that for my whole life i said i didn't understand how she wasn't happy about it, and that once she realises WHY she's weird to them, and why they feel the need to say so, she'll be strong enough to tell them how pathetically boring and weak they are, and to fuck off.
Avatar 4:18pm
Ike:

I've always pronounced it just like "timber", the word we yell when we're cutting down trees (not that I've ever cut down any trees). Interesting to see "tam-bər" as an alternate choice in M-W.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
fred:

@Ike: I remember seeing a Canadian researcher getting almost angry (maybe that was downright angry for a Canadian) about that "timber" pronunciation
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
weinstein:

Timbre=texture. Weird=a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. They both probably sound better in French.
Avatar 4:27pm
geezerette:

Weirdness is entirely contextual.
Avatar 4:30pm
northguineahills:

This has an E.A.R. vibe going on...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Stanley:

Is this a jam?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
Stanley:

Yup, I just read it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
fred:

David: I don't know about that, but I (too) often have to take part in conf call where the word comes up, and confusion only lengthens the ordeal. Maybe that's why that Canadian was so insistent. Asking for timbre specialists (timbre is one of his main research topics) in the wrong way could get some undesired applications up there
Avatar 4:32pm
geezerette:

I've often heard people say "tamb" for timbre, in a way that sort of emphasizes the b, gradually trailing off. Being a non French speaker I have no idea if that's meant to sound French, or actually is.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:33pm
weinstein:

I think after three long days of this they were all so exhausted they stopped trying to entertain us and were really listening to each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
fred:

@geezerette: It's not that far from French, actually, one of the rare times were the "r" is barely there
Avatar 4:36pm
geezerette:

Thanks Fred! It's always seemed authentic to me when pronounced that way.
Avatar 4:45pm
geezerette:

Coel, hope your friend found her people, the ones that love what she loves and can share insights and knowledge with her.
Sorta like fmu!
