So, today's Tape Hiss will be on the modern classical/experimental/abstract end of things. There will be some pretty quiet stretches where you might think you've lost the "signal" ... plus coughs.

Ahoy, Stanley and Sem!!

This is quite a collection of musicians.

Jeff Golick played a track on Sunday a.m. that quizzified the comment board, a blend of static and vibraphone.

Jumping into the stream. Good afternoon.

Hey, βrian! Jump away -- there's plenty of room for all of us, plus the odd tire.

Tony Coulter:

Love the sound of a microtonally tuned piano (tho I guess it might depend on the tuning!)
Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

The next track on this tape (up in around 8 minutes) features Frodo the chimpanzee, who sadly is not credited on the cover.

Cough cough! Hello Tony & everyone!

Hiya, Yvang!
Avatar 12:26pm

I suspect a lot of audience coughing is more or less a nervous tic . People are worried they might cough, so they do.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
Yvang:

or it's contagious, like yawning...
Avatar 12:31pm
Tony Coulter:

The piece on now incorporates a tape made in Africa by Bernie Krause. It features the cries of Frodo the chimpanzee, plus low-register chimpanzee tree-thumping.
Avatar 12:32pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: Yeah, that too.

Not hearing much-the pop up SEEMS to be working...
Avatar 12:39pm

@ doctorjazz: Thing is, this tape (and most heard today) have a lot of dynamic variation. They get loud, but also very quiet.

Mayuko:

Looking at these cassette tape artworks (and I was just going back into your previous tape hiss playlists) made me discard a design I spent all day yesterday. Now working on a new thing. How come these DIY cassette tapes look so good even when they're so simple? Or is it just me romanticizing them?
Avatar 1:44pm
Tony Coulter:

No, I think a lot of them do look really good! It was something in the air. Artwork by the same people from, say, 10 years later probably wouldn't look as good.
Avatar 1:45pm
Tony Coulter:

But sorry to make you discard a design!

coelacanth∅:

greetings Tony and hiss listeners
Avatar 1:49pm
Cecile:

Don't discard the design. Just save it! It will have its time!

Having made some of there, and also flyers, the designs were cleaner because cheap copies did not do well with grayscale or too much clutter. And color copies were super expensive. So there was a lot of chartpak, neat printing and getting an image down to its strongest essence.
Avatar 1:49pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Yeah, this tape is almost an hour long, so it's the last full cassette I'll have time for -- there will be more non-cassette stuff, though.
Avatar 1:50pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, coelacanth∅!

I remember handcoloring copied B&W tape covers and Christmas cards because I wanted color, but not color paper or expensive paper.

Dean:

But...four!
Avatar 1:52pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Oops -- can't count! Guess my feeble brain was conflating the two short ones I played back to back
Avatar 1:53pm
Tony Coulter:

Good points, Cecile....
Avatar 1:54pm
Cecile:

It's like wanting to music back then instead of now. You had to have a little bit of ambition to make it happen.

I love the new apps and whatnot, but I always start on paper, and still like to do hand-drawn stuff.
Avatar 1:58pm
Mayuko:

Ah, that's a very good point, Cecile! Limitations definitely helps polish a design.

It's always good to be inspired and wanting to do a better job, so thanks Tony for not only the music but also the images!
