I'm gonna take all the piled, folded and wadded clothes off a couple of long improvised shelves -- where they've lived since a nice contemporary looking dresser reached 80% drawer failure -- and put them into an adopted old dresser and a couple of newly improvised shorter shelves....if the researchers want to study that primate storing/solving/organizing behavior after the post-storage/solution/organizing box treatments elsewhere.

My road memories of doing it are in a friend's '54 Desoto in 1978, which, due to the strange shifting character, flavors, relationships and mapping of time periods and artifacts, would not be the same if done today in any 1993 vehicle.

A buddy had a sixty-something convertible bug in the mid-70's that he painted a kind of perfect swimming-pool aqua. Included in those memories is a few of us riding dirt roads in a state park getting toward Cape Cod area, with one rider atop the back of the rear seat firing a bow and arrow at (non-animal) this and that.

My dad had a pale blue bug from Barbados, with the driver's seat on the right. We were riding in it when it flipped over once, I think there was a slick spot on the road. My car seat saved me, but I remember things going dark and bumpy when it happened. It hasn't been driven much since then but he still has it.

Well, this isn't exactly Pepino the Italian Mouse again, but maybe his Syrian cousin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
coelacanth∅:

melinda why'd you have to use the car seat so late?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
melinda:

I guess my mom thought a lap belt wasn't enough. I've heard of parents doing the same thing more recently, if the kid is on the small side. I don't have kids so I don't know what's normal, but it seems like back then most parents were way too lax, not using seat belts at all, and now more of them err on the side of safety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
coelacanth∅:

haha i thought you weren't going to answer me, as i realised it was kind of a stupid question!
...i forget that some kids had parents that treated their kids as something precious. i never even heard of car seats until i was probably a teenager; and we never wore seat belts. (i don't think our '57 chevy had them)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
melinda:

My mom was ahead of the times in that respect, but it was very unusual and was accompanied by general overprotectiveness. It all comes down to individual risk perception.
  11:19pm
Dean:

We don't "err on the side of safety." We are legally required to keep our kids in car seats until they're, oh, 26 or 27.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
coelacanth∅:

our next door neighbor bought a corvair, which had a back seat that folded down (up?) to create something like 2 rows of bleachers. one hot day we all went to the community pool in that car. that very small car. 7 children and 4 adults.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
melinda:

I missed out on some social events because the parent driver in question didn't have seatbelts available, cars had them but they would get lost in the seat cracks from lack of use.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
melinda:

Crazy times! Sardines in a corvair...
  11:25pm
Dean:

In sixth grade parents took turns taking us to school. One of the parents had a beat-up pickup. We'd sit at the very back against the gate, knowing that en route we'd pass a bump in the road. Approaching it the driver would accelerate so that when we hit the bump we'd fly several feet into the air and land (we hoped) back in the bed. Scary as all fucking get-out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
melinda:

Our '69 Ford Econoline van had a metal fence separating the passenger area from the back, to protect us from flying cargo should there be an accident. (Dad still has the van too!)

Dean:

It was nuts. We survived. But then we didn't. Three of us were sent to a "special" sixth grade class. Of the three I think I'm the only one alive. One committed suicide in 2001 or so. The other I don't know, but the last time I saw him, mid-'90s, he was in a likely drug induce fog. I imagine he's gone, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm

@Dean: I had friends' parents do that w/ me in their pickups in the 80s, I thought it was awesome at the time (but we pressed ourselves against the back of the cab w/ out legs against the wheel wells so we wouldn't be thrown out of the bed of the truck).
