Favoriting March 5, 2018: Irwin Chusid cohosts the first Techtonic marathon show

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

This evening, Irwin Chusid co-hosts for our first Techtonic show of the WFMU spring fundraising marathon!

Make a pledge here to support Techtonic and WFMU. With a $10 per month pledge, you can get the first-ever official Techtonic Tshirt! Shown below, designed by the brilliant Greg Harrison for WFMU:

Just make sure to check the box for a "DJ Premium" and on the next page, you can check the box to choose the Techtonic t-shirt:

Tonight, Irwin Chusid and Mark Hurst discuss some of the recurring themes of Techtonic, such as...

• What are the alternatives to Big Tech, and why might we want to try them out?

• How does Silicon Valley respond to charges of making tech that's addictive (or otherwise harmful)?

• Where do we look to get inspiration for the true promise of tech? (See the interviews with Jace Clayton, Cheyenne Hohman, Andy Rehfeldt, among others.)

• Why should we pay attention to China and its technology?

• How is AI beginning to affect the economy (as shown in the interviews with Botnik's Bob Mankoff and Jamie Brew, and research scientist Janelle Shane)?

You can listen to Irwin Chusid on his own show this Wednesday (and every Wednesday), from 12pm to 3pm. See Irwin's past shows here.

I miss the NEAR operator that Alta Vista and at least one other search engine (I forgot which) had. You could search for files where the words occurred within 15 or 25 words of each other. It's useful for discriminating against long, omnibus files that contain the words you're searching for the conjunction of, but in entirely separate contexts.

NEAR should be easily programmed in SNOBOL or some such.
