Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from March 30, 2018 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Baseball was a huge part of my home life as a child. When I got to my teens I revolted against pretty much all sports as they carried a certain negative conotation to me. I have grown to enjoy them later in life but outside of Soccer I have not really followed. I have as of late with visting many minor league ball games grown interested in Baseball again.

Phil Schapp is notorious for playing 20 minutes of (great) jazz music, then pontificating on it for 30-40 minutes, including what food was delivered to the recording session, pining about the lack of jazz knowledge in the current generation (for a few generations now), and dropping names of the musicians he used to hang with. Not many know more, but are harder to listen to, than Phil. (and it's gotten worse over the years).

@doctorjazz now now I would say he plays at least 25 minutes of (great) jazz.

frenchee:

I scooped him on the news that Joe Williams had died, years ago. I was curious why his station wasn't playing tributes to the great JW, so I called the station and asked "So why aren't you playing Joe W?"
Phil's answer: "What are you trying to tell me here?" He was almost indignant.

Oh, and UM, football (soccer) match is only 90 mins, not 3 hrs. w/ a 15 a min halftime, and maybe 2-5 mins of added time to each half, you're guaranteed the match will be over in under 120 mins from kickoff (except tourneys which have Extra Time (OT)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
Uncle Michael:

It all feels like extra time to the uninitiated.

Doug Schulkind:

Phil Schaap will be sitting with and interviewing some legendary, luminary musician, often an older gentleman with the occasional foggy moment of recall, and our Phil will be correcting and contradicting from here to Sunday. It's shameful, really.

If my bros. and I can school my father on soccer and make him a fan (it took a decade and a half, and last summer sitting down w/ him for a weekend explaining the nuances), there is still hope for you. Now, I need someone to sit down w/ me and explain cricket, I love the sport, but much is lost on me. (been watching a portion of the match every weekend the last few years, and still haven't figured it all out).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Doug Schulkind:

He is somewhat self-aware, to his credit. Once at the top of one of his broadcasts the music got cut off, then was restarted a few seconds later. Schaap spent the next five minutes on mic dressing down the poor, inexperienced student who mistakenly opened the wrong CD player at the end of his show. Schaap's attack on this kid was so mean and inappropriate I called in to complain. Schaap answered the phone, heard my complaint, and said, "You are absolutely right and I'm sorry" and then hang up.

Yeah what he plays is great and a bit more then some of the info he provides is good, but he can come off pretty friggin "dicky" for lack of a better term. For a few years it is what I would start my day in the office off with and I would usally tune him out or turn down the volume when I got tired of it when music wasn't playing.

During his Bird Flight show he is not above playing a track pointing out a nuance then playing it again then pointing it out again then playing the isolated part of the track then speaking about it for a bit then playing the whole track again. I've heard Charlie Parker groan,
