i was 11 years old when i first saw rocky horror with my friend at the now defunct art cinema in scenic downtown new brunswick for the midnight movie. wow. left a mark.

@ nickrhombi -- WOW!
i saw Rocky Horror for the first time there, too (i think i wanted to see it at least once before venturing to The 8th Street Playhouse?) but, i was already in college!

Steve Sanders! Honestly, the rest of the 90210 characters ended up being SO MUCH WORSE

nickrhombi:

... my friend was a couple of hears older and his sister was watching us. his folks were out of town. they dropped us off. - when we came out of the theater it had snowed. it was after 2 am. the streets were empty. it was SO COOL!!! especially after such an emancipating and impressionable experience. - i cant believe you remember the art theater!

@ nickrhombi -- what an amazing experience!!! i mean, just being out at 2am at age 11 (i was not even allowed out of the house!) but ESPECIALLY getting to see Rocky Horror (i remember seeing ads for the Broadway production when i was about 15 and being intrigued, but never got to see that either) again, WOW!!!!!
and yes, saw a bunch of John Waters films at the Art Cinema back then (late 1970s/early 1980s) . . . i think they were midnight features too

OK back to Black Orpheus tonight! (a little on Monica's show!)
  10:36pm
nickrhombi:

everybody was very cool. and no one seemed especially surprised to seek two kids there. (?) this would have to have been like 1978 ... maybe january '79. - they played the live meatloaf concert before and i didnt know anything about the movie or meatloaf. - i got the record at a place called electronics unlimited in edison. my mom threw it out!

yes! i was at Douglass, fall 1977 to spring 1981
but, last two years lived off campus -- 1st apt. was a tiny room on Easton Avenue, about a block from the Art Cinema
  10:46pm
nickrhombi:

its hard to get my bearings over there now after 'the greening'. between george st and the bridge. - but yeah, i would think yours was the midnight movie, too because during the day i think it was triple x. (waters wouldnt even be on the map for me until much, much later!)

slugluv1313:

yes! that is what i am recalling too -- XXX by day, "off radar" films by night
and ya, back then -- New Brunswick was all bulletproof glass in the liquor stores, really amazing thrift shops (got a dresser for $10!), cool record shops (Cheap Thrills and Half Thoughts for used vinyl -- and where i also found a Rutgers yearbook with "longhair" Kenny Kaye!) and lingerie shops with crotchless pantyhose on mannequins in the windows . . .
Douglass was the women's college (still is Douglass Residential College) -- started out as an English major, ended up Sociology/English with a certificate in Women's Studies (yup, back then, nobody was issuing degrees in that yet!)
Cook College was the agricultural school -- had NO idea about that cow!!! yikes! (and i am not just saying that b/c i am vegan!)
Avatar 10:58pm
slugluv1313:

omg Therese you have a DUNE pop-up book??!!
i found a whole box of them -- years ago, way west village, dumped on the street -- after the film had pretty much bombed! grabbed a bunch and took 'em home . . . you are like the ONLY other person i know of who actually has one of these!

nickrhombi:

i feel like i should have known that about cook and douglass... its robertwoodjohnsonville now. everywhere. i think there is one antique shop still on french st called somewhere in time. - where i once scored a fly white tailcoat for a cool twixie. (thats what i do. antique/vintage.) wow, man... cheap thrills... right around the corner from the court tavern, right? george and church i think. (i like to think that whole cow thing was more of an urban myth...)

the cow at cook was called "the holey cow". they drilled a round hole through to one of her stomachs and put a rubber cork in it. at "ag field day" people were encouraged to stick their hands in and pull out some barely digested hay.
lovely.

I'll never forget seeing them with Black Dice (or was it Liars?) and Sonic Youth during the Murray St. tour (circa 2003?
). Lightning Bolt set up on the floor in the back of Irving Plaza and started playing after SY's 2nd or third encore wrapped up and people were already departing the venue, leaving all to jockey for position in a hot, sweaty, pulsating mass around the band.

@ nickrhombi -- YES! LENNY Kaye! (again, weird auto-correct)
@ coelacanthø -- ughhhhh i had NO idea -- poor cow!
but, i had no interest in agriculture (growing one's own food, YEAH! but not the INDUSTRY)
had i known about the cow, i may have turned vegan and animal rights activist a lot sooner -- i was already involved in social/feminist activism -- but had not made that connection yet . . .
THANK YOU again, Therese, for a fantastic show!
