Yeah, mariano -- there was a whole thing. It was actually mainly the Melnibonean mythos from Moorcock's book that caused the kerfuffle. Those first couple of printings of Deities and Demigods go for a pretty penny.

No like first- or even second-circle friends (or fam) has been sick, though a few people think they *might* have been. Everyone is guessing about a lot of things.
Swings and roundabouts. Strikes and gutters. Every day has a lot of different weirdnesses. I am working from home. Job seems stable for now. Kate has lost 2/3 of her jobs, and the rest is doubtful since it doesn't look like schools are going back.
So, like everyone, everything is weird.
One thing that really freaks me out is friends writing from out of state just breathlessly, "Are you all OK? It sounds like a NIGHTMARE!" I try to assure people that the hospitals must be, and our health workers are really taking it on the chin but that our quarantine experiences must be pretty much like theirs, just more on foot. Like our lives.
I think the news must be making NYC look pretty nightmarish, but I get all of my news from the accu and Salvage, so I am a bad judge.
I found this helpful and sane seeming. Listener Brian with a Beta B shared it: www.chronicle.com...
mariano:
Now, that's of course pure anecdata, but maybe it's a hopeful sign that confinement has started to work. There was a huge spike today in Louisiana, jumped to over 10,000 cases from (I think) somewhere in the 3-4,000 range. But part of the spike was expected, as the results of tests administered weeks ago start to come in. I guess we'll see either way.
Handy Haversack:

I'm also getting anxious messages from all over, but so far mostly people in my world only really have money anxiety.

I've had some friends of my pop and such. Some parents of both fellow teachers and our students have fallen victim. It is rough out there.
My only close situation to my knowledge is trumpeter Wallace Roney. Through certain circumstances I came to learn he lived in my town a few years ago, and we hit it off. I was in the beginning stages of helping him write his bio. That's small beans though considering he died. He had given me his number years ago and was into putting the book together. It's yet another reminder that one shouldn't assume there will be time for this and that later.
Even the seemingly simple shit has no guarantees. Wallace went nowhere without his horn, and I am well aware why. No matter where we were he would have it in this ratty case with a broken zipper. I threatened to fix that zipper many times, alas never did it in time. What I liked about him, as I do about many, is that he had a somewhat singular vision...gigging and blowing his horn. Anyhow, I don't pretend we were like brothers or anything, but I got to know him and would call him up and grab a bite here and there as he regaled me with insane stories of the jazz world...and other things.
So...I sit here, pops fragile as well, my best bud's mom in lockdown at 84 because she lives in a 65 and over joint that got infected. She is also a great friend of mine. Silver lining of it all, I can be with my dad who we know had issues since Xmas.
I'm a few deep and babbling, but I want to finish by saying I appreciate getting to know some of you cats within the past 6 months...and it is a benefit now more than ever.
Peace and love, baby!
Damn...this Beam and Coke is going down proper...

Apparatus of the Dark Kimmerians: These apparatuses serve the subterranean Kimmerians in the exploration of their dangerous, dark realm. A harness clings to the wearer’s shoulders, supporting a tight-fitting metal and leather helm in the shape of a horse’s head. Held by a stiff mane on top of the helm is a small cage in which a genetically altered songbird is wired in place, fed and watered by tubes that pierce its breast. These birds are essentially immortal as long as the apparatus functions and they meet no fouler end. The birds’ feathers house symbiotic algae that glow with a strong but ghastly green radiance, providing effective light in a 20' radius. These algae completely protect the birds from extremes of heat and cold, excluding magical effects. If exposed to toxic gases, the tiny creature dies. but this triggers the apparatus to clamp shut its horselike jaws. The wearer will be able to breathe stale, recycled air for a full day cycle before needing to replenish the apparatus’s stores. The Guild of the Pierced Breast in Krimmea can replace the bird and restore the apparatus to full functionality.
