This “high prices finance new drugs” story capitalizes ruthlessly on the lack of understanding by the public that most of this research is done at universities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
a5vzener:

I'm a believer in capitalism, because it's only real way to get stuff out of a lab and into the public's hands. But I believe we should extract more from our capitalists in the way of taxes, in large part to help people afford drugs, etc.
  6:44pm
P-90:

I’ve been fuming about this for years...

And researchers at universities spend thousands of hours a year securing and securing the renewal of federal funding for that research. So, again, we've paid for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm

and thanks, Mark!
and brainiac, Handy, David in London, chresti! good to see you all.
and hello, kevlicki!
  6:45pm

Relying on capitalism “to get drugs out of the lab” is the WORST way to do it.

Avatar 6:48pm
brainiac:

Healthcare run as a business instead of a service puts profit above people EVERY TIME.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
a5vzener:

capitalism = private (non-governmental) ownership of the means of production, essentially.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Mark Hurst:

The five prior capitalism-focused interviews I mentioned at the top of the show all have varying definitions, different opinions about the ideal system etc. etc., but all are united on the basic diagnosis that our current Big Tech-driven system must change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm
a5vzener:

But also believe that healthcare should not be primarily private. I live in Canada and I like our system up here.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm

Avatar 6:50pm
brainiac:

It's as bad as bad can be, Handyman.
  6:52pm
P-90:

For a long time I’ve argued that one of the strongest arguments for the adoption of universal healthcare is the negotiating power a government healthcare administration would have: “We’re purchasing X-billion units of this drug or surgical tool. We’re not the only game in town but by far the biggest. Now: who’s got the most competitive bid for our order?”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
a5vzener:

All I'm missing in my life is Dolly Parton.

Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:55pm

P-90, I wonder if there are other problems of capitalism that could be solved by socialism. Maybe a private company will research that!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm
a5vzener:

@P-90 You're right. Big government negotiation is the key. When I was in journalism school (early 90s) I did a story about the cost of one of those morning-after pills. The cost for one in France was about 10 bucks, versus more than 100 in NYC. Vive le gouvernement!
  6:57pm
kevlicki:

A5vzener agreed that state control doesn’t represent my ideal. I’d argue for more “democracy” in the workplace and more owners of the means of production.
Historically it appears that capitalism constantly attempts to reduce those factors, while privatize what is shared commonly and extract it for the benefit of fewer folks
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:57pm
