the WFMU minimalist / unobtrusive / “retro” (unintendedly or not) website is a major component of my love of WFMU! Seeing WFMU switch to a modern new Java-filled Wordpress theme would be a major bummer.

I had the same experience with the Church of Balder Rising's Web site, mostly hand HTML coded by me, and the rest legacy pages by the other Bob: Someone this year told us it looked 1990s. That was fine with me, but the other Bob has a taste for fashion, so we had the critic redo it. It looks fancy now, while previously it just looked functional.
  6:15pm
Chico:

I imagine it would have been too much of an undertaking to facelift the entire site, and they just opted to do just the homepage. Silly......

Yes to old technology that still works. Reminds me of an interview I watched recently with a guy who wrote a book about the fetishization of innovation, I forget the name.
  6:18pm
Listener Robert:

I'm usually put off by all the face-lifting and other changes to Web sites, especially interactive ones that I then have to relearn to use.

I really, REALLY hated it when around the turn of the century Reason magazine redid their look. The new look was made for people without presbyopia and in general looked ugly and less functional, albeit fancy. Apparently it's what all the cool kids go for now.

Dean:

Libraries are the place where one is supposed to be able to read books. And yet long before Vint Cerf and Sir Tim Berners-Lee librarians were mocked (a sexist thing) for "Shush!"-ing. Now that "information" (books, but also ads, blogs, tweets, nonsense) is ubiquitous, libraries are forced to compete for people's attention. That requires using the library for more than mere information-seeking and consuming, i.e., reading.
