Love the story of how Xmas stopped Trench Warfare.
Post from 'Besides it's a B-side' fb group:
Based on an actual series of events on Christmas Day, 1914 in some portions of the trenches in France during the Great War (WWI). Recently commemorated for its centennial by Sainsburys in its 2014 Christmas ad (which you can find on youTube). Sadly, the leaders (far removed from the front lines, of course, and comfortably housed and fed) were outraged at fraternization with the enemy and many of those who took part in the truce were redeployed to more hostile sectors on the line. Steps were taken by the commanders of both sides to prevent a recurrence in 1915 - one general ordered a heavy barrage on the enemy's trenches for Christmas Day. There was even an attempt to deny the Christmas Truce had ever taken place, but the event was sufficiently documented so as to disprove any naysayers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7ErrZ-ipoE
